WHAT'S NEW?

Dear Askers & Answerers,

Usually when my sister calls and asks, “What’s new with you?” I say, “Not much.” In the time between our weekly chats it’s not often that something big happens. But that is not the case here at Know-How Exchange!

We have had an unbelievably active two weeks since our last newsletter. To recap, here are all of our new developments with links to sample pages and more info.

  • Experts contest (ends tonight)  more >>
  • Premium subscriptions (includes 2,500 points!)  more >>
  • Top 100 KHE Experts List (we have more than 25 superstars!) more >>
  • Invite Colleagues system (part of our More Questions! campaign) more >>
  • Quick Start Guide (to help new members)  more >>
  • Improved Moderator Help page  more >>
  • New login graphic (reminder to login)  more >>
  • Modified 5 Points a Day system (to reduce the late-start disadvantage)   more >>

We’re also close to having banner graphics available for download. When we do, you’ll probably get to them from the Invite Colleagues link in the Participate box. So watch for that.

Now that you’re up-to-date on the forum’s functionality, I hope you’ll breeze through this email to find out what’s going on in the community. Clearly, lots of new developments are happening among all of us!

Happy exchanging,

Val Frazee

GOING, GOING … GONE!

Here are 5 questions likely to close soon. Have an idea to offer? Better do it now.

  1. Marketing an outdoor sports stadium
  2. Marketing Pay-back for a university
  3. What are some ideas for cheap B2B marketing?

SUCCESS STORY

I know you are all busy and don't have time to read every message posted in KHE throughout the week. So I wanted to bring this discussion to your attention. We could all learn from the 18 thoughtful responses to this question, posed by samkoko60. Fourteen of our peers shared their ideas.

How do I approach an old lost customer?!!

Just a reminder: This question is closed (meaning the points have already been awarded).

TIPS & TRICKS: 5 POINTS A DAY

Did you know you earn five more points AUTOMATICALLY every day starting the first day you participate in Know-How Exchange? So if you thought you were “broke” and haven’t been back for a week or so, you might want to login and check out your profile. You could have 50 more points than you think!

Also, if you haven’t yet posted a question or an answer, this is a pretty good reason to do so. Any discussion center like ours will have a large number (in fact, a majority) of lurkers. And that’s fine! We’re happy to have you read and learn. But we’re sure you’ll learn even more through active participation.

Last week we had about 14,000 clicks in KHE. There are 1,500 or so folks receiving this newsletter. And as you can see from the Community Stats section (below), we have roughly 400 active participants (non-lurkers). It would be fun to see that number jump dramatically.

So if you have had a question on your mind - or you have been meaning to browse for a question to answer - please give it a try! We would love to have you join the conversation.

Have a question? Ask the experts.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MEET MICHELE

Many of you will recognize Michele Sohn (her Community Name is Michele) from her postings throughout the discussion center. In the two weeks since she joined our community she has offered 65 answers to KHE questions. Let's get to know a little more about her.

Where exactly are you based?

Johannesburg, South Africa - city of gold and heart - veld of commerce and culture in our cosmopolitan country. Being born in South Africa means this place is home. It gets under your skin and rubs off on your soul. Nowhere else is quite like it.

[veld = n : elevated open grassland in southern Africa]

Tell us about your company.

Spoke is an expert network of communications and business strategists. We help our clients understand the intersections between brand and business, and we enable them to develop systems and processes to deliver market-driven growth. We have a special focus on digital research and have an exciting new product which will go to market imminently.

What kinds of KHE questions do you enjoy most?

Complete ones! The best kind of questions are ones where there is sufficient information to give considered advice. There is nothing more frustrating than a half-asked question, as so much in marketing is context-specific. It is useful to know factors like industry, target market demographics, budget constraints and time constraints.

Describe one KHE discussion you learned something from.

The only answer here is the obvious one: All of them! Any discussion that I have actively engaged in has forced me to think the issues through. Re-examining old issues in a new light is as much a learning experience as breaking new ground. But if I had to choose, I would say the real answer is the flawed points system question - as it made me think about my real reasons for being here.

The competition looks tough at the top. How hard is it to stay in the Top 10?

All it takes is a little obsession and disregard for time! I'm sure as the forum gains momentum, jostling for a place at the top will become even more intense. Like many other contributors, I think the thrill is in seeing an idea evolve, real-time, with global expert input. The points are just a means to an end and not an end in themselves. Sometimes I use the Exchange as an place to test some bleeding edge ideas against a sounding board of experts before unleashing them on paying clients. At other times, simply sharing past success stories is reward enough.

Describe one of your non-marketing interests.

Watching my one-year-old son delight in the ordinary.

Last time Jett shared a quote. Do you have a favorite?

“Life is too short to drink bad coffee.” I couldn't agree with you more, Michele.

FORUM FEEDBACK

The Know-How Exchange is awfully young (less than six weeks old). So we're still refining how things work. We have a gigantic list of action items, and your feedback helps us prioritize it. So please feel free to reply to this email with any suggestions. Thanks, in advance, for your time!
