New Product Development

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am studying Marketing and I have to write an assigment about NPD. My task is to analyze the strategic and operational factors that contribute to successful new product development! I am not sure what is meant by strategic and operational factors?

    hi relaxo

i think the strategic and operational factors for a NPD would relate to

strategic: what is the differentaiting factor that can ne incorporated into the product.
do the customers actually require the features that you are incorporating.
is the product that you are coming up with in line with your existing image.
the amount of risk involved if you go ahead with the project.
the kind of segment that the new product is catering to and their affinity towards it.

    operational:
is it viable to produce the product.
the time it would take to produce it(lead time).
the budgetary allocation for the product.
how to minimize the cost and stay on schedule to develop the product.
how to test market the product.

    does this help you,
    let me know.

A good starting place for the strategic side would be a SWOT analysis for the product (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) as compared to its competition. There may not be any direct competition, but the competition includes whatever is currently meeting the need that the product seeks to fulfill.

Operationally, I would add to Sam's list, issues surrounding:

1)Distribution. How would the product be distributed - through what channels and how would the channels be managed?

    2) Inventory management - how would inventory be managed - what if the product sells out too quickly? How would you continue to satisfy your customers if they have to wait?

    3) Business model - How would sales overall of the product be managed?

    Good luck -

When you didn't know, that was a clue that you should ask your teacher how they define strategic and operational factors. I will just take a bit of a wing at it here and guess that:

Strategic means big picture things a company is using to accomplish major goals

Operational means detaled processes and action plans to get the strategies done.

Of course in modern enterprises, there many ways for strategic or operational error to bring NPD or NSD to futility. There are a few big successes out there too, when a company can pull off a big win that is well executed and meets its overall strategic goals.
