Swot Analysis
Posted By: fnazzal on 3/15/2006 3:41 PM (CST) 250 Points
I'm going to start marketing toothpaste in South Africa. My target market is 18-25.
I need to ask you if you could give me some information about the SWOT analysis of that market?

Write me back if you need more information.

Thank you.

For starters, who are your competitors when selling toothpaste in South Africa?

A vital portion of the SWOT analysis is in studying your external market, which is the competitors and the buyers. Those cover the OT of SWOT.

I'm sure you are already familiar with the vehicles of SWOT analysis and its drawbacks as well...just as a question that I would ask a client, is lets start with the competition.

As clarification...

Is it the process of performing a SWOT analysis that you are seeking, or specific SWOT information about the market you seek...what information are you looking for here?

The SWOT analysis essentially is a window to view of your internal and external market. Let's break it down as such.

S-Strengths: This is the internal look at the strengths of your company (product). You should pinpoint the reasons that the buyer would choose this product as compared to other options.

W-Weaknesses: Again, an internal look at the potential and actual weaknesses of your company (product). You are seeking the faults of the product that could cause trouble with it in the market.

O-Opportunities: This is a view of the external market that you will be dealing with. Examples of this for you may be the lack of competition, perhaps other toothpastes in the market do not taste good, or are not very effective. Your opportunity is to sell the toothpastes that the consumer likes the taste of.

T-Threats: Again, external. This is a view of the threats in the market...a fickle market that may not like your product, a market that is already saturated by other competitors, or has a product that the consumers are already very dedicated to.

It is important to note that the SWOT analysis is only one step of developing a market plan and it does have a tendency to fall short in many areas of the development. It would also be a good idea to define your STP (segment, target and position) plan and understand how you will get to your market and build market share in the long run.

Hope this helps, email me if you need more info.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Do you have any information about SWOT analysis in the South African market?

fkazzal -

You are treading a fine line here. Our experts will not do your SWOT analysis for you. They can and have provided info on what goes into a SWOT, where to find templates, and other basic info. They will also help you work through these items ONCE you show that you have put some thought into the matter.

If this were a student question, I would have closed it when it was asked. However, since it appears to be a serious business question, I am allowing it. At the same time, I would expect someone attempting to launch a product to have thought through some of this. Otherwise, you are asking our experts to give you free marketing consulting.

So, here's your last chance before I close the question

1. Who is your competition in SA?
2. What, is anything, is different about the SA market?
3. What identifies your brand?

Come up with some of your thoughts for SWOT and then you can expect some real help.

Carrie

My competition would be all the big brands. Colgate is very strong in South Africa.
The South African population need to improve their teeth. And over there, they do not have fluoride. Therefore, if we focus our product and let it have fluoride, I think it would work.

So then, in reference to above, what would your competitive strengths and weaknesses be? If you talk it out, then you have competed the first half of a SWOT analysis.

Next, you must determine, once again, the opportunities (floride) in the market, and the threats (a strong competitor) of the market.

That is your SWOT analysis. Perhaps I stand on a different side of the tracks than some others, but I feel that, as a marketing tool, the SWOT analysis is only mildly effective in truly understanding the task at hand. I would personally put more effort into exploring your STP (segment of the market, targeting, and position with the potential consumer). I believe, that as marketing goes, these are your breadwinners.

Best of Luck.
