    Hi Rajesh,

No doubt, RSS is a marketing tool. I was going through a article in MarketingProfs - "RSS: What's in It for Marketers?".

    The utilities are:

    1. Form of communication that makes it very easy to push out information
    2. Permission based email marketing
    3. To have higher visibility in search engines. Google and Yahoo give preference to information having RSS feeds.
    4. Dont need to open web page
    5. Get updated with the latest in a particular area

Right now penetration of RSS is around 4 to 8% in terms of awareness as told by Eric Frenchman.

A similar term is ATOM ... its is also XML file, which have the same functionality but normally is used for Blogs. Just visit an atom of a blog on marketing.

In future you will see that most of the website will have RSS Feeds on their front page.

RSS - real simple syndication. By default it is a marketing tool, since potentially the same content will be syndicated to many places.

Currently, one of the advantages of RSS is that it is mostly adopted by "early adopters group" so if your product fits in that category it is a good channel.

It is permession marketing, because people sign up for it - so it is very targeted and contextual.

I believe giving latest things/information to you customers is a way of marketing (www.amazon.com). So using RSS ('Really Simple Syndication') allows you to see when sites from all over the internet have added new content. You can get the latest products, headlines and articles (or even audio files, photographs or video) in one place, as soon as they are published, without having to remember to visit each site every day.
Few things need to know about RSS:
    • File Extension: .rss, .xml
    • MIME Type: application/rss+xml
    • Type format: Syndication
    • Extended from: XML

The abbreviation is variously used to refer to the following standards:
    • Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
    • Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)
    • RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)
    • Real-time Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

So how does it effect on marketing?

RSS is a family of web feed formats, specified in XML and used for Web syndication. RSS is used by news websites, weblogs and podcasting. For marketing point of view they can use in Direct marketing , Public relations ,Customer Relationship Management ,Advertising, Search engine , Online publishing and E-commerce.

RSS is an excellent tool for marketing because the subscriber has complete control over what they subscribe to and how often they read it. As such, it is possibly the most trusted and easily adopted vehicle you can use for marketing.
