You have 2 alternatives when selecting a name:
- something "catchy"
- something that reinforces your differentiating characteristics and strengthens your brand. (If I get a vote it goes for this type, but it's your call.)

If you want the 1st type, look for something that rolls off the tongue, has a rhyme and/or double meaning and is easy to remember. Conduct a brainstorming session for 15-30 minutes (or until new ideas dry up) and capture every idea - the good, the bad and the ugly. Your goal should be to get as many ideas without evaluating or filtering any. When you're finished, put the list away until the next day - then select the good ideas and any promising ideas that you can build upon. (Feel free to laugh as you discard the bad and the ugly!)

If you want the 2nd type, you first have to:
- define your differentiating characteristics. What makes you different from other similar businesses and why should people use you instead of your competition?
- define your target customers (buyers and sellers) in as much detail as possible. What are their: ages, income level, marital status, sex, educational level...?
-define what you want your brand to represent. In the future after your brand is established, when someone hears your company name what do you want them to think of? With this information, conduct a brainstorming session as described above.

Having said that, how about:
- Buff
- Fit

If you want something along the lines of Maverick, how about Wranglers or Cowboy Up. The Cowboy Up is a prase for when you have to go the extra mile to get something accomplished. Good luck.

In this case, simple is the answer. Don't try to fancy up a name for a fitness center. It'll just sound cheesy. Stick with basics and highlight a great and one of the kind feature that is different from other fitness centers in your area. Offer fun smoothies or fat free popcorn!

Jen's gym etc.

The Forge ....the workshop of an artisan who works in hard materials,
1. A place or establishment where iron or other metals are wrought by heating and hammering; especially, a furnace, or a shop with its furnace, etc., where iron is heated and wrought; a smithy.

In the quick forge and working house of thought. --Shak.

2. The works where wrought iron is produced directly from the ore, or where iron is rendered

3. The act of beating or working iron or steel; the manufacture of metalic bodies and in this case with free weights, reps. and knowledge of the craft of self determination!

Hope this is along the lines of what might work for you.

Cheers

I'd suggest the name "Reps" -- it's short, easy to remember, has an associated context, plus "R" words have a connotation of "Strength."

Good luck.

Good opportunity, here. The NYSC's and Gold's Gym brands are tired. I would opt for progressive though.

Ript. (could do some great font stuff)
Ript Room
Pumpt
Spot Zone
Sweat Zone
DFine
Tone Zone
The Weight Room
Health Forum

-mind
_____
matter- (mind over matter, represented graphically)

If it's a casual environment, Sweat Shop could be fun. (though, might appeal more to female clients, but I don't know your target members)

And for an abstract and fun (again, not knowing your market environment), and for a definite male-target group, Animal Zoo, Animal House (copyrighted?)

Or just plain abstract,
Republic/Republika, Pantheon, Hi-Fi [health..?], 2B (to be, digitized) half of famous shakespeare quote, that explores identity)

And what I would call a gym if I opened one? SPQR (almost mocks the pretentiousness of NYSC, but also the insignia of the Roman guard, which implies strenth, integrity, endurance.) Simple, iconic, and a good brand 'weight' to it.

Many of these could include ___ 'Gym' following title, or function independently.

Hope it might help!!
