Tagline- Emotional Or Descriptive

We are a small manufacturer of industrial Flame and
Gas Detection equipment. We have very little brand recognition outside of Canada. We are trying to enhance our branding and to provide a tag line that
will differentiate ourselves from our competitors.
Our name does not tell you what we do similiar to
Nike, IBM, Volvo etc. Our target markets our to
engineers, process people in refineries, chemical companies etc. eg.

"We save lives"
"We just do it better"
"You can sense the difference"
"The Fire and Gas People"
"Our business is saving lives"

Morning Larry,

You're asking a lot from your tagline, but you can find one that works. Not only do you need to explain what you do, you should probably be explaining why you're different at the same time.

Given the sensitivity of your market you may want to contact a company offline for dedicated tagline development.

I think you're on the right track looking into the deeper meanings of "sense", though you still don't have a differentiator for yourself there. I'm sure there are quite a few competitors out there that can do what you do, but there's got to be something about your business that sets you apart. That's what you need to nail for your tagline to work.

As for the taglines you've suggested I think you'll be happier if you find ones that can't be used for other industries. Be as specific as you can - especially because people don't know of you yet. Statements like "best in the business" and "doing what we do best" don't merit a second thought - or even a first. Get specific or just skip the tagline altogether. In most cases vague taglines are worse than no tagline at all.

You have 2 alternatives when selecting a tag line:
- something "catchy"
- something that reinforces your differentiating characteristics and strengthens your brand. (If I get a vote it goes for this type, but it's your call.)

If you want the 1st type, look for something that rolls off the tongue, has a rhyme and/or double meaning and is easy to remember. Conduct a brainstorming session for 15-30 minutes (or until new ideas dry up) and capture every idea - the good, the bad and the ugly. Your goal should be to get as many ideas without evaluating or filtering any. When you're finished, put the list away until the next day - then select the good ideas and any promising ideas that you can build upon. (Feel free to laugh as you discard the bad and the ugly!)

If you want the 2nd type, you first have to:
- define your differentiating characteristics. What makes you different from other similar businesses and why should people use you instead of your competition?
- define your target customers (buyers and sellers) in as much detail as possible. What are their: ages, income level, marital status, sex, educational level...?
-define what you want your brand to represent. In the future after your brand is established, when someone hears your company name what do you want them to think of? With this information, conduct a brainstorming session as described above.

Without knowing more about your differentiating factors I can't make any specific suggestions for a tag line.

Of all the responses above, I would agree with Tate Linden and the Stokefire Team. Although his firm and mine are in the same business, I am familiar with his work, and would highly recommend that you take some time to at the very least, speak with him and his team.

You are asking a lot from a PS/TL, but Tate can walk you through a few ideas/concepts.

I'm looking for creative ideas. "Free"

I know about options of using a marketing or
ad agency to create to "tagline".

I have about 50+ taglines, just thought I would
use another vehicle to see if someone would be
creative enough to come up with something, we haven't.
