Need 24 Hour Boxing Gym Name
Posted By: goranson88 on 7/16/2006 6:50 AM (CST) 250 Points
We are opening a small 24 hour boxing and fitness gym in the next 6 months. Looking for a strong name. Your help would be appreicated greeatly.

We will offer self defense classes, cardio training, private lessons and have the normal workout equipment. The gym will service anyone...not just the aspiring boxer.

We will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Ript. (could do some great font stuff)
Ript Room
Pumpt
Spot Zone
Sweat Zone
DFine
Tone Zone
The Weight Room
Health Forum

If it's a casual environment, Sweat Shop could be fun. (though, might appeal more to female clients, but I don't know your target members)

And for an abstract and fun (again, not knowing your market environment), and for a definite male-target group, Animal Zoo, Animal House (copyrighted?)

Or just plain abstract,
Republic/Republika, Pantheon, Hi-Fi [health..?], 2B (to be, digitized) half of famous shakespeare quote, that explores identity)

For the more Boxing Gym connotation:
Boxed Inn
Boxing House

And what I would call a gym if I opened one? SPQR (almost mocks the pretentiousness of NYSC, but also the insignia of the Roman guard, which implies strenth, integrity, endurance.) Simple, iconic, and a good brand 'weight' to it.

Many of these could include ___ 'Gym' following title, or function independently.

Hope it might help!!

simple, cool. Your tagline should reflect your target audience and without knowing who they are guessing is just that.

I really liked Contenders as this was one I thought of as well. I was worried about copying from the TV show. Anyone know the particulars in regards to if this name could be used? It sums up the energy and vision of what I would like the name to communicate.

I like may of the other suggestions as well and will accept an answer today. Again, thanks for all of the input!

My reply is based on my firm's experience in working with health/wellness businesses.

1) Couple of thoughts: You said "The gym will service anyone...not just the aspiring boxer." If you include a reference to boxing in the name, you'll turn off people who aren't interested in boxing or have a negative view of it. For example, you probably won't attract women interested in general fitness (unless your focus is kickboxing, and even then...). You also probably won't attract anyone who's relatively unfit. Not saying that's good or bad - depends on your business goals.

Keep in mind that the already-active folks out there have plenty of gyms to choose from. The underserved part of this market is unfit people of all ages/both genders.

2) While folks in this industry often choose names and taglines that they think are cute or clever or plays on words, customers tend to respond best to straightforward names that clearly explain what your business is about.

I'd suggest that you check out whatever name you pick by at least googling it to see if anyone else is already using it. That'll also tell you whether you can register your business name as a domain name. Also do a quick search yourself (it's free) at the US Patent & Trademark Office (www.uspto.gov) to see if it's already registered.

Sadly, any name that's especially catchy is probably already taken, and even very small businesses can get cease-and-desist letters when they use names that are already registered...better to check it out upfront and consult an attorney, in our opinion.

We've got guidelines and examples of what to do/not do on choosing names specifically for gyms and similar businesses; EM me if you want them.
