Name For Dessert Restaurant
Posted By: anichols2* on 7/17/2006 1:01 PM (CST) 250 Points
I'm in the planning stages of opening a Dessert-only restaurant.

Just to give a little background...This is inspired by one of my best friends who diagnosed with a brain tumor a couple years ago and has the best outlook on life. Her motto is "Life is too short. I'll eat dessert whenever I want." She's honestly my hero. So, I want my restaurant to be a place where you can just hang out and be with your friends and enjoy great dessert without feeling like you have to eat a salad to be bad.

I'm thinking mid-scale, yet cozy. Thinking about Moroccan/jewel tone color scheme. I'll be serving traditional desserts like cakes and pies but also other assorted pastries (very sinful). I'll serve various beverages from Soda to Wine to Coffee. My target is the 20 to 30 age range, women and couples.

I live in a college town, where there are a lot of international students. Also there is a Mercedes Benz plant here so lots of German Engineers are coming into the area. The area where I want to set up shop is in the heart of Downtown, very close to the University. There's going to be a brand new Federal Building in the near future. So lots of people moving into town.

I've brainstormed a few names (see below) but would love to hear some of your ideas.

Ganache, Delectable, Luscious, Blissful Temptations, Tempt Me, Redemption (pay for you sin), Original Sin, Indulge

Given the health concerns regarding dietary habits in general in western world countries I'd take a slightly tongue in cheek approach and call it

'It's All Good'

Taglines could be along the lines of

Stop punishing your tastebuds;
Because it's good to be sweet;
Where you'll get your just deserts

Best of luck to your business and your friend

Just Desserts - and be sure to include the story of why you became involved in the business...its a real heart toucher.

I can see your brand finding its niche with folks who are passionate about dessert. I can see you attracting those with a real lust for life, as well as those who simply LOVE a great dessert. I can also see a fantastic corporate take out business.

I have a great recipe for Peanut Butter Pie I could send your way. I agree, savor the moment...and be sure to have a fund raiser night where the featured dessert's proceeds are donated to a cause. I could see double scoop strawberry ice cream night going to breast cancer (pink and you get the picture)... Gelato night going towards the heart and stoke foundation. It would be nice to give something back, yes?

Hi there

I think you're onto something great here. Not sure about the Moroccan colour theme. When I think Moroccan I think 'spice'

Mid-scale, yet cozy.

http://www.maxbrenner.com.au/

Is a similar concept. Maybe you will be able to pick some ideas from it.

Because it's chocolate, their colour scheme is brown.

But browns, blacks and purples are three common colours in decadence themes.

I'm not really going for a Moroccan Theme...just color scheme. Think deep purples, reds, oranges, yellows and blues. To me these colors say decadent and rich.

These are all great ideas. I'm having a meeting with my business partner on Thursday, so keep up the great work!

Thanks.

I have to mention "Dessert First"...

But I love Ganache. Goes with the colors, the international clientele, short and memorable, looks good on a sign, sounds elegant even if you don't know what it means.... it's got everything.

I too love Ganache. My only problem with that is it's a chocolate dessert. What do you think about Süsse. It means sweet in German. Do you think people would have problems with the pronunciation? How do you think it would affect the business?

Thanks.

Great story, and I agree it would make a great element to be included. "Dessert First" popped into my head first, too - tag "Life's too short to be uncertain" (*tag just about implies itself!*).

or,

"My Treat(s)"

You don't mention a geo-region aside from college town. But if geography serves, it may be (painfully?) obvious to go with, say, 'Mojave Desserts'; humor can, itself, be an invite to casual, comfort, invigoration...

just my 2 cents...;)

I would avoid cute names or those that play on words. Business owners think these are creative, which they are. But they do not connect effectively to customers. Around here two winebars opened, one Portalis, and the other Grape Escape. Can you guess which one is out of business now?

I suggest taking the range of responses above and putting them into Affinity Groups. Then go out and do semantiic profiling with your target customers. This can include designed Questions based on your name/tagline that reveal willingness for price points/frequency and other factors important to you.

Interesting, Kevin. Can you tell me where to get more info on "connecting effectively" (seriously). In this case, especially with college nearby (notorious for embracing the avant garde), engineers who - while knowledge is sophisticated - often seem to be keenest appreciative audience of subtle humor/indulgence, and German customers who enjoy a culture where food is to be enjoyed - period - and time in good cheer equally savored.

Re: Portalis vs. Grape Escape, I'm presuming Grape Escape went bottoms up. But while a name is very important, it's on the surface of the whole strategy and identity AND - not the least - conduct and service. One name or the other would not explain to me the cause of their demise. And perhaps the area could only sustain one place/the other didn't feel up to adding to its offerings.

Not saying all this to refute you in ANY way, Kevin - you are probably a master marketer, and all you've said deserves due consideration. I'm - literally - begging here to be allowed to peek into more knowledge, myself. ;)

I'll admit to snobbery. When I first went to Europe in 1972 – with the backpack and nylon boxers (to wash out in hotel sinks) – I met some folks who in Germany and Switzerland always ate dinner in restaurants, but ate dessert in places called:

"Konditorei"

I was talking with my sister today and she suggested Dessert Oasis. Any opinions on this one?

What do you guys think about using a name that already exists in another state? Doing research online can be a wonderful thing. I'm finding that all the names I like are already being used. So far none of them in my state. Are there certain guidelines I should be following in regard to this?

Posted by: somelevity Member Response
7/22/2006 5:58 PM (CST)
imho, make your own name - what if your biz really, really takes off and you want to branch out to other states? with your own name, there's less conflict, even if you set up shop in those regions where the others are.

Also, re: your own name - if the other places for some reason contract a "bad rep" (say, food poisoning) you certainly don't need that haunting your endeavors.

Dessert Oasis is - to me - very reflective of the background of what you're really trying to offer - goes beyond the product, itself. Is D.O. elsewhere, as well, do you know?

I should say now that I'm not an expert business starter; I've sold handmade products over many years, and did marketing for a global industrial company. I've started my own retail company just this past month and am building an online presence, with growing outsourced product line as well as my own custom original artwork, trying to leverage many years of various skills/talents.

Biz can be a complicated path enough without knowingly entering conflicting gray areas in regards to other names. just more two cents that might not be worth taking to the bank. ;)

I agree, but then I'm biased. haha Hey, TGI Friday's and Outback Steakhouse are enjoying a pretty penny. I think it's more about matching - you PROBABLY wouldn't want a funny name for a funeral parlor. I, however, WOULD - which is why I'm not in the funeral parlor business, because I know it wouldn't do good business. ;)
