Hi e-marketer. Let's get right to the point. I'm assuming that since you want a designer with "consumer market experience" you plan on using your website to sell goods or services. At the very least you will be using it to capture leads to bring your customers to a brick-and-mortar store.

That means you must have a "shopping cart" system that securely exchanges financial information from your customers for product and delivery information from you. It needs to be able to capture, verify and process credit card data.

You need some sort of a product/service catalog. It probably will contain hundreds of individual descriptions and images. And catalog/ordering numbers. These must be linked to your shopping cart. Each purchase requires a confirmation email so that the customer is assured s/he's getting what he clicked on the page.

Going one step further, you'll need not only a web presence that displays your wares, you'll need some communications tools to reach out to your customers. Both new and repeat. This usually calls for an email program of some sort. It should look like it came from your company, incorporating your branding look and feel.

Perhaps you have enough "news" each month to fill a newsletter. It should also look like it came from your company, complete with appropriate design, graphics and perhaps photographs.

If I'm right, you will be spending an inordinate amount of money working with a designer and a "back end" team of programmers.

And it definitely helps to have someone on board who understands the protocols and best practices of e-marketing. After all, your best customers (meaning least expensive to obtain) are repeat customers. You want to continually contact these folks with new offers and promotions based on their previous purchases. For example, if someone purchased a custom designer shirt, they might be interested in a similar design that you just added to your inventory. A Cabernet Sauvignon drinker could be enticed to order a Cabernet Franc.

Another way to encourage repeat business is through a loyalty or points program. When the customer earns a predetermined amount of points via website orders, s/he's rewarded with discounted or free merchandise. This, too, can be run from your website.

By now you're probably wondering just how much is this going to cost. Without getting into a sales mode here, which I'm sure wouldn't be appropriate for this forum, let me just say, probably much less than you think.

The key is finding the right program that combines all these various e-commerce and e-marketing functions so they work seamlessly. Of course you could hire your designer, your back end team and ask them to cobble together all these functions. And hope it works.

To make any integrated system work, you need a back end database. The database captures customer information (name, address, purchase history, email open history, etc.) and stores it. The more you can segment your database, the more control you'll have over your outbound communications.

I know there's many approaches to your situation. You asked for a recommendation. Here's ours: http://www.primeroad.com/webgenius-home.html

Whichever way you choose to go, you can contact me for additional guidance. All the best for your new enterprise!

Norml....that's one long response.

Hate to break it to you, but you are taking the long way around the horn. Most businesses can get by just fine with an install of OScommerce (opensource), or perhaps a commercial version of Cube Cart. Integrating into the existing inventory system is a lot of needless work. Why not save time and simply have your staff pull the items off the shelf and process the order. Businesses always over complicate the process...when jumping to do is sometimes faster and easier (not to mention cheaper). I've done two online grocery stores with OS commerce, and about to do a third. I've also set up four online shops with another software system, about to complete the fifth on Friday.

My take on the request, you'd be way over building..unless I'm reading the poster's question wrong.

My two cents....moving on...

check out http://www.elance.com and http://www.getacoder.com/ spec your job and have people bid on it.

Try searching google for "Freelance developer" for more simillar sites where you can post and have developers big. You can also check their past ratings. Dont go for the lowest bid unless they have built up credibility in past jobs.
