Improving Company Name & Tagline
Posted By: deanhua on 8/29/2006 12:44 PM (CST) 350 Points
I'm about to launch a networking group in the DC area called, Networkersville.

I'm tethering on whether or not it will be a general networking group or more for entrepreneurs.

Assuming if I want this networking group for entrepreneurs, what kind of tagline should I add to Networkersville?

Or should I do away with Networkersville and make the organization name more "entrepreneur-centric"

I ran into this group for entrepreneurs, Entrepreneur 27, http://www.entrepreneur27.org . I really liked the company name.

Thoughts?

Dean,

Hello from just South of the Beltway. My firm is about an hour South-east of you I think.

Anyhow - a couple things. DC has a large number of networking groups already, so you might want to check around. I know they've got stuff for marketing, entrepreneurs, rich folks... you just gotta find 'em.

As for the name/tagline - I'm not sure you've hit on the right one yet. I'd suggest going for something more evocative with your name rather than descriptive. And... well... "ville" probably isn't the image you're going for either. Sure, it has the small town community feel that you want, but it doesn't hit on the aspects of success that you're probably going for.

Consider using a name that talks less directly about what you're doing and more about what you want people to feel when interacting with your group. Much like Ford's Mustang, you could evoke a particular type of thinking with your name.

Of course, naming has a couple dozen variables to consider... far too much detail to get into here.

Feel free to contact us off-line via our profile if you want to talk. We give a free 1/2 hour consult to local folks. Always good to know more people in the design business...

Good luck!

First, for me, Networkersville sounds a bit like a place for people who work on networks (computer networks) may get together. That's what I thought right off. It doesn't sound like this is what it is actually for though, which may be a problem if other potential customers get the same impression.

Unfortunately, I can't say that you have a great name. I would challenge you to list all of the networking companies just in DC and see what you come up with for names. I am willing to bet anything that you will come up with at least 3 others that sound pretty similar to your name, specifically that includes the word "network" in the name. It's just not going to be a differentiated name no matter what you do with it.

We recently worked with a recruiting firm that had "recruiter" in their name. They were almost entirely Internet based, so anyone with an online presence were potential competitors. We found in just a cursory search 20 other firms that had "recruiter" embedded in the name. Do you think they stood out?

I'm afraid you may find yourself in the same position, especially as a new entry into the market. As for the entrepreneur expansion, if you had a more suggestive and less literal name, you can simply do without much stress. Since your name is so literal, you're at an impasse. For the record again, I don't like Entrepreneur 27 either for the same reasons that I'm not fond of Networkersville.

A tagline would be a simple addition after you have the right name. I would highly recommend working on developing a more suggestive name for your company that would allow you to stand out more in the market (think: Yahoo, Virgin, Amazon). These aren't easy to come up with, but it is worth the effort. There is a disciplined approach that should be applied to a naming exercise, so unless you have experience, I wouldn't recommend tackling it on your own. You can view more about this process on our website (see our profile) to see what is involved.

Let us know if you want to talk.

Regards,
JMR for Focus Fields

I don't live in DC I don't even live in the US but in the UK but I bet that like most major cities DC has a load of networking opportunities for all sorts of people so...

my view is get specific and create something that is clearly only for your target group. Then create a name/tagline that speaks to them. I would even suggest entrepreneurs is too big a group as many people "consider" themseleves entrepreneurs but that may not fit with who you are "really" targetting.
What will this network group offer for its people?
Why should peple come along?
Who is it specifically for?
Where will it be held (could this be a differentiator?

OF course if there are many generalist network groups perhaps you need to add "extra flavour" so peole can see, hear and feel the difference between your group and all the others.
Good Luck

Hi
Networkville is a good name if its meant just for general usage, but since you want to focus specifically on entrepreneurs, how about something like
creativebugs.com, dreamworkers.com, getstarted.com

Best regards

@ Tate,
Hi Tate. Nice to meet another Washingtonian. Yeah- it seems that the consensus is that Networkersville isn't cutting it for people.

@epistles,
Hmmm...none of those names seem to click with me.

@Focusfields,
At this time, I'm not looking to pay for the groups name considering this is a PT venture b/w me and another partner or two, but thanks for trying.

I guess I have to keep thinking up some names to see what works.

I know there is PNA- Professional Networkers Alliance. But that's too cheesy for me.

I've heard of Biznik. Sounds to Web 2.0ish for me :)

I've heard of YesCircle which is mostly for entrepreneurs. But sounds too hokie for me.

Sorry but I agree with everyone else... Networkersville doesn't really get it for me. It sounds a bit hick-ish.

What do you want people to think when they hear your name?

Info-Share
InFlow
Third Thursday (Would you have a designated meeting day?)

Not sure those work. But, can't seem to think of anything at the moment. I'll keep thinking about it.

Good Luck!

I'm not shilling for business here (you'd know if I was by all the emails I would have sent you). I'll give you some good, free advice. If you do want to look into a name, try WordLab (google it). Go into the forums and post what you are looking for. You will get something good out of this. Not necessarily the ideal, most insightful name, but perhaps, and (with all due respect) better than what you have here.

@Andrea-
Hmmm...not sure how info-share sounds any better.

I actually thought about Talk Tuesday or something of that matter but I didn't want to limit it to a day

@Focus,
I have no problem if you were shilling for business :) I'll look into Wordlab. Thanks.

Are you even interested in this new name idea?

You didn't come to the site really looking for that, so I'm not sure we've really helped.

As far as the name goes, if you want some help with it, tell us a bit more about your brand (not your company). What does it mean? What does it do? What's its personality? What do you want it to do? Try describing what the experience of interacting with your brand would be like in as flowery and flattering terms as possible. This is a great way to figure out a name.

I'll give you a real example...if you are familir with the product called Roomba, you've seen this thinking in action. Think about how that company might have described what the product does and how people interact with it. "It's like a talented entertainer dancing seductively around each room." Bingo...Roomba.

Actually, people here have helped.

But regarding the identity, I wanted people to think;

Wow, what a great community of business professionals to come and mingle with on a montly basis.
Fun but still professional atmosphere. Relaxed & conduscive to networking for other entrepreneurial minded folks.

I'm still interested in the naming idea, so I'll see what others will say before I close out this thread. Thanks for the ideas again.

Good luck with it. Seriously, not shilling for business, but here is something to get you started that we use with clients. It's a survey that we use to understand what they are looking for. It helps us understand more about them and the type of name they may be happy with (assuming it also matches with the brand). If you want to take the survey, I'll give you some (free) feedback on what you should be thinking of. Here's the link to the survey...it's up to you.
