The Best Marketing Books Of 2006
Posted By: iozel* on 9/17/2006 5:47 PM (CST) 250 Points
I am preparing a reading list for my students taking my strategic marketing class at senior and MBA level. Can anybody contribute with any book suggestion to my list. My criteria is, I do not want to list text books or academic books. I want to introduce real-life business books on strategic marketing, management and also social sciences related to socio-political aspects of business life, consumerism, corporate responsibility..etc etc. which will broden my students perspective.
Thank you in advance for your contributions. All the best from here Istanbul.

I like the book, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable. It gives an awesome perspective on real world marketing that stands out.

Also check out products by Michael Gerber (e-myth.com). He's got great stuff on marketing and all aspects of business. He's the best business coach I've seen around.

Best wishes!

Purple Cow mentioned above
Rebel Without a Crew - Robert Rodriguez
Hello He Lied and other truths from Hollywood Trenches - Linda Obst
Michael Caine's Acting in Film
The Art of War - Sun Tzu
Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind - Reis & Trout
The New Encarta Dictionary

These help open doors to reaching for more books.
Invite some of these experts to do lectures on their personal books too.

I'd suggest The Core Value Proposition. Its wa of thinking provides a powerful anchor for new ideas. You are guided to a new starting point for strategic business development. The foundations of your business proposition are developed within an easy to understand 4-step business-building process. Go to www.trafford.com/robots/04-2745.html to review its content. I've used it successfully to help my clients.

I suggest a section covering the book "Guerilla Marketing". The number one issue people face is marketing with scarce funds... this will help them more than anything else they read.

Hi,
I am happy that many valuable suggestions are coming since I put the message. But may I ask you all to suggest me books which are newly published , lets say between Sept 2005-Sept 2006.
Because every year I am trying to develop a reading list of very fresh/recent books, not marketing classics or books published in 2000s.
All the best & thanks

Two great options:

The Power of Nice, by Linda Kaplan and Robin Koval
The Culture Code, by Clotaire Rapaille

Both published in 2006 and both are accessible yet thought provoking.

social science and marketing... definately choose

Malcolm Gladwell's book, Blink.

About rapid cognition and how it effects perception, judgement in all contexts including marketing. Brilliant book.

it is a follow up to his other fantastic book - The Tipping Point.

search blink book and you'll get to Gladwells site to get the synopsis you need.

I'd recommend Competing for Customers and Winning with Value: Breakthrough Strategies for Market Dominance, by Reidenbach and Goeke. 2006 A real-world book with examples about how to use market perceptions of value to create effective, competitive marketing plans. Includes planning templates.

If you're interested in how value drives Lean Thinking, and how to extend Lean into channels of distribution, try Value-Driven Channel Strategy: Extending the Lean Approach (2005). This one is based on the premise that value at the point of production does not necessarily equate with value at the point of consumption, and makes a good case for applying Lean to channels of distribution.

Finally, I'd recommend Strategic Six Sigma for Champions: Keys to Sustainable Competitive Advantage (2006). This is an outstanding resource for using the Voice of the Market to identify and prioritize Six Sigma projects. The authors have developed a Voice of the Market Toolkit that identifies competitive performance gaps from a market point of view, and that explicitly links those to specific processes for focused process improvement. A really unique approach.

All 3 books are published by ASQ's Quality Press, and are also available at Amazon.com

The title of your question limits repsonses to 2006 books, but if you'll consider going back a couple years, I highly recommend The Innovator’s Solution, by Clayton Christensen and Michael E. Raynor from 2003. This is a book that deals with marketing as a strategic discipline, not just communications. What do the customers need? What markets are viable? How dominant is the competitor, and how do we establish a leading competitive position in a new market? I consider this one of the best strategic marketing books ever written, and it applies as much to small businesses as to corporations trying to manage a portfolio of products. Some books flash by as the "best of the year." Others have enduring reference value. This is one.

I suggest Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point" from a product marketing standpoint. It focuses on the point at which a product reaches critical mass (think IPOD) and literally overnight has mass appeal. The book highlights the circumstances surrounding each ascent as well as the things the products all have in common.

For example, I believe that the Mac PC will hit critical mass sometime in the very near future (look out Gates).

Thank you very much. The lectures started today and I have already developed my reading list with the help of all these valuable contributions. I would continue adding ofcourse new books as the semester flows. So if anything significant comes I would be more than happy. I don't know if we can share articles through this platform but if we can I would love to see what you think is worthwhile to read and share my references with those who are interested.
Happy autumn from here Istanbul
Ipek.
