Help Name My Boutique Please!!!!!!
Posted By: Lcash81 on 10/18/2006 11:14 PM (CST) 250 Points
I am opening a clothing boutique in Madison, Mississippi that will focus on 18-28 year old women. We will sale designer jeans, trendy clothes and accessories. I have a couple of names in mind. Please pick the one you like best, why, and that you don't like about the others. Also I am COMPLETELY open to any suggestions you might have for another name. Here are the main 2 I have.. "Miss Chaos" & "Just a Girl". I also have thought of "Vixen", "Sublime Culture" and "Be-In". Please help!!! I have to have this soon!!!!

I think Sublime Culture is actually more catchy than the other 2. Miss Chaos is fun but unattractive to the psyche. Just a Girl doesn't really hit it for the up to 28 crowd. But Sublime Culture is open, feel "In" and has a mystique. It allows the consumer to be at ease whatever culture or clothing they favor. It can withstand the test of time and seems to fit nicely with the motif that you are offering.

I like Vixen, I see more potential in creating a brand identity out of it vs the other names you dropped. The other names also seem dated in my oppinion. Vixen is timeless.

Hi LCash 81, My vote: "Sublime Culture"

Definition: sublime | of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe : Mozart's sublime piano concertos | [as n. ] ( the sublime) experiences that ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous. • used to denote the extreme or unparalleled nature of a person's attitude or behavior : he had the sublime confidence of youth.

And culture | the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively : 20th century popular culture. • a refined understanding or appreciation of this : men of culture. • the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group : Southern culture | people from many different cultures.

I like that one in terms of your choices. The other definitions have negative connotations that may not test out into the future. (my take only).

And "Be-In" That's cool. We all kinda like to Be In better than out!
Those are trendy and fit your demographics. I also recommend playing with the word "Madison" since it's soooo famous in NY.

Does this help?
Kathy

Have you thought of "MissMadisonMississipi" and you could have M-Cube as a short name. Infact having a mnemonic always helps increase recall- sometime later you can run a promotion asking people to guess which M stands for what?

Miss Chaos: (MC)Well with 18-28 as your tgt segment- this shd work especially since anything chaotic is fun.

Just a Girl: (JaG)Too tame- assuming that everyone who wants to wear your clothes wants to transcend from being Just to girl to Vixen!

Vixen: love it- is there anyway you can add Bizarre ?

Sublime Culture: (SC) Classy, gives a corporatish feeling.
Be-In: Nope. Too "in your face"

Kat Sass

Sort of like the 'Cat's Pajamas' but a little sharper or edgier.

Good Luck

I like the M3 suggestion

The only "problem" with named like Vixen, for instance:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=vixen%2C+clothing+store

I'm partial to personalizing it. For instance, I founded Armadillo Golf Players, Austin's premier Co-Ed golf league. I work in the enteratainment industry & Austin is of course the previous home of the Armadillo World Headquarters, legendary concert club.

AGP also happens to be my initials

So, for instance, I don't know your name, but you could just call it CASH (you use in your user name, possibly your last name??) It's certainly hip, has a Johnny Cash affiliation -- and it doesn't get much cooler than him...and maybe will send that karmic message out into the world for buyers to bring you theirs! ;)

Other names that popped into my mind if you need other suggestions:

My Sister's Closet (isn't that always the best place to find a cute outfit..anywhere but your own!)

The Closet Floor (where all the cute clothes end up)

Sassy (not found on google as store name, used as an adjective)
Sassy Sister
Sassy & Chic
Sassy Factor
Hip Chick

Good luck!
Alicia

I like Vixen, but it does put you into a pile of other Vixens. Siren is good, too, but same problem.

So how about SirVix...no, forget that.

Clothe Encounters (maybe too nerdy)
The Venus Shack
Hummingbird
Her Attitude

...Good luck!

Wow! These are a lot of really great ideas! Thanks yall! I still don't think I have quite reached it yet though. Some more we have some up with are, "Tempted" "Cio Bebe'"(Chow Baby...but I think it may sound like a dog boutique) "Splendeur" (I like it...but being in MS it sounds like a redneck say "splenda" lol)"Miss Chaos" is not completely out the door...anymore ideas?

Unless you are focusing just on sexy clothes (which I don't think you are), then I'd stay away from names like Vixen (or TeaseMe, Teaser, Tempted, Provocation) -- that sends the wrong message. To me, Miss Chaos" brings to mind army fatigues.

I like the idea, too of using Madison (even Madison Avenue) in the name. For inspiration, some names here in Atlanta are: Cherry Pie, fab'rik, Uptown Girl, Mitzi & Romano, Luna, Sage. You can also combine two random words like Blue Aquarius (not that I'm suggesting that particular name) or use just a number, spelled out, like Twenty-Eight. (What is the address? Maybe that number would work).

Madison's strong Socio-Economic numbers per capita and the International sounding name preferences you have suggested here and in previous MProfs entries suggests to me you might be open to a name that is "City Specific to Madison, Different and International"
....

Your Sister City in Sweden might fit that bill.

Solleftea Sisters

Not quite -Soul Sisters- but similar sounding and very memorable. Should get you some press or cute Press Release.

Perhaps something curvy could be done with the double 'S' in the Sign Name for a logo considering we all think Swedes are sexier than most of us, the subtle connection will be implied esp. with a suggestive Logo if that is your wish.

Good Luck

Just some more thoughts and comments on other names suggested...

Novahammer's thoughts regarding the sister city are good ones, but the word Solleftea would be very hard to pronounce for an American, unless it is already well-known in Madison as its sister city.

"Cio Bebe" is also hard for Americans (there are many who won't know it's pronounced Chow Baby) -- I also think you might have a trademark conflict with the nationwide women's clothing store, Bebe.

The Venus Shack and Tempted both fall into my previous comment about sounding somewhat like a sex shop.

Anyway, it's easy to criticize other's ideas but hard to come up with any on your own! Have you thought of going to a local college to either survey students or ask a marketing class to come up with a name? That could generate some good PR and give you some instant customers! If you're personally not in the age group of your customers, it would also help you understand how they think.

How about "The Avenue" or "Avenue Madison?" (I like these two best) but here are other suggestions:

"Ms Madison" (play on state abbreviation plus the title "Ms," also sounds like a pageant, which could be good or bad, depending on what you're going for). This one could also be M2 (superscript 2) jumping off the previous idea.

and another NY-inspirated name: "Madison's Garden," or "Madison Squared" (maybe that sounds like your clothes are "square" though).

Cio is spelled Ciao if you go with that mixed with Bebe or if there is a conflict call it Ciao Babe or Ciao Bella--both available from my search.

I love the play with Madison still. Work with a design that positions the trendy classy gals you are that is not like the school or take the Ave off and have a nice glitzy sign that communicates M A D I S O N S
with a tag Avenue of the Clothes!!
Good luck,
Kathy

Thanks for all of the wonderful advice!!! You have all been a great help and inspiration! Although this is not on here, we heard it tonight and it just really hit us in an awsome way..."Envy" It just sounds hip, trendy and catchy! Feels like what we were after. Any thoughts or comments?

Hmmm. Reads like a lot of folks like playing on Madison and you have been recently hooked on Envy. Maybe some combination of Envy and Madison could suite your needs.

I like the suggestion of pitching some ideas to a small group of college students, hair stylist, art students in the area. Since this is a local establishment you may get some very good vibes on the local hip-ness. We all can suggest ideas from a distance, but there is nothing like being in tune with the local customers psyche.

Besides, a small word of mouth group like this could be the start of some very good word of mouth promoting starting a buzz in the community.

Madison Envy
The Clothes, The Attitude

Madison Envy
The Sublime Cultures Home

Madison Envy
Not just any Avenue!

Good Luck!

I can't help thinking that if you don't use "Avenue" with "Madison," then the whole point of using Madison is lost, because people will just assume you're referring to your city's name and not to NYC. Adding Madison to "Envy, " for example, just adds 3 long unnecessary syllables.

Envy is fine, especially if you use a beautiful green as your main color in the logo and maybe a script font. Maybe purple as an accent color. The name doesn't strike me as very unusual, but in a small town, it will probably stand out. It denotes a little edginess, if you want that. If your store will have more of a classy feel, it wouldn't work as well.

I'll just throw out one more idea for the heck of it. In an earlier posting, I suggested using a number. That seems like a popular thing in Atlanta right now, especially with restaurants and clubs. One hot club with your age group is called eleven50. I like the combination of letters and digits. Seems hip but with class. I'd probably go black and white (or black and silver) with the logo, and put the word "boutique" first. Example: "boutique seven50." (and if you use the address, people will always know where you are)!

Oh! and that gives me another idea -- what street are you on? If it has a good name, you could be Boutique@Tenth, Boutique@Main, etc. I tend to forget where places are, so that would a good reminder of how to find you (although Atlanta is about a million times bigger than Madison)!

Keep us posted. It will be fun to see what you end up with.
