Help Naming A Woman-owned Construction Business
Posted By: casseracomm on 10/21/2006 2:17 PM (CST) 125 Points
My partner and I (both women) are starting a construction business. We can handle jobs large (roofing, siding, plumbing) and small (painting, general household fixes) and have a team of reliable workers that are qualified, professional and on time. We really want to convey the feeling of good customer service along with quality work.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Since it truly doesn't matter whether "women-owned" is in the title, let me ask you in which area of the country/world are you?

Will you build spec homes, or general construction services, such as updates, kitchens...etc?

Artemisia

She built one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, ruled after her husbands death and successfully defended her people against invasion.
Quite a 'gal' it appears!

This refined but strong name starts with 'A' (important to some for Phone Book listings), is very different and is construction and leadership specific.

It would fit nicely with any other name or word to make a unique, professional brand to help with the female angle you mentioned.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Something to think about is simply using the initials of your first name and your partners first name and add the function of construction services, LLC.

the core of your brand is more than a special name at this point and this is why i have a very strong gut feelings that a fancy naming convention will not convey the true impression of what you do and who you are.

At this moment this business is all about 2 female partners doing something that is mostly a male dominated industry. What better way to name it than to call it by to female names and adding construction services?

All the best,

Henri

My question is why is it important to highlight you are a women owned business in the name of your company? Actually you did not say it was.

I would use your last names "Cassera & ? Construction" and then get a tag line that conveys your value proposition. There are people on this forum who are very good with tags lines. I am sure they can help.

Are you looking for an angle like the guys who have a unique branding approach with 'Carpenters in Kilts'? (their all male workforce show up on the job site dressed in Kilts).

Are you looking to play up the all female ownership, or just focus on getting the job done, and done right?

I like the Pink Helmet Crew - odd jobs done right, on time, and on budget.

Odd job Betty's

Renetta's Reno's

Fran and Frieda's Fix ups. Then add Danielle's Design and Paint division for the painting and interiror design department.

My two cents worth.

When it comes to a company name, there are 3 main factors you should keep in mind: legal availability, memorability & positioning.

LEGAL AVAILABILITY - Is the name legally available for use? I've know so many people who in their 4th or 5th year receive a cease and desist letter from company who had that name both them. A trademark attorney can help you do this type of digging. Or you can get it done cheaper by having a quick trademark search done by Alex von Allmen at BrandMother.com His number is 916-985-6205. Tell him Melvin Ram sent ya.

MEMORABILITY - How memorable is your name? It helps if it is visual. I started my company as Novel Studios. No one could remember it. Now it's Volcanic Marketing. I tell people once and they don't forget. Something sexy or fun or descriptive usually helps.

POSITIONING - Does the name position you correctly in the mind of your target audience? If you're targeting large businesses, a lofty name that seems more established may be the way to go. For smaller businesses who are more price conscious, sounding affordable will be very important.

Whenever I have a client who needs a name, I usually recommend Alex von Allmen (916-985-6205). If you have a few hundred bucks to invest, I'd give him a call. Having a good name pays off because all your other marketing depends on it.

As for my suggestions? How bout:
- World Wonders Construction (bad. starts with a W.)
- 1-to-1 Construction
- Dunrite Builders
- Personal Builders
- Powertools + Hammer Consutrction

Incorporate your woman-factor as it will help you win minority contracts but don't dwell on it in your marketing as there are more important factors to compete. Also, your company is going to be more than just you two. Your male employee's shouldn't feel like sissies for working for you. Pls don't make them wear kilts, I beg you. You want something everyone can really feel a part of and build ownership in.

Does this help?
