If You Heard It, What Would You Think ?
Posted By: gpick* on 11/16/2006 4:45 PM (CST) 125 Points
I am going to approach this submission in an unusual way. Instead of asking you for names or ideas for creating names, I am going to provide you a name and would like you to tell me what you think of, without revieling what the product is. If you guess the right answer (or the closest of the submissions) you get the award.
My hope is to determine whether or not the name fits the objectives of the organizations.

REACH IN (dot com)

(p.s., we haven't gone live with the site so visiting the site won't help you)

In and by itself, without a Unique Benefit Statement, it doesn't mean anything. I don't believe that you have to cutsie in names (Google--what does that have to do with search engines, Fedex with overnight courier), but they have built up a UBS so that when I see the name it actually means something--same goes for Xerox for photocopies.

When I think of reachin it means that I am being allowed to take something (reach in and help yourself). To me you are offering people to join them in a social network and take out information or leave information.

I'm thinking it's a data mining program that allows a company to reach into its existing data content and extract something useful.

I do like your approach here Gary and also agree with Neal's assessment that without a context it may not have any connection.

By the way Neal, were your parents big fans?

On the chance that you gave a clue "fits the objectives of the organizations", I'll guess that its a site supporting contributions and volunteering for non-profits. Since these organizations are always talking about their outreach, I'm surmising that reaching in is to help them.

Got to think outside the box!

I think it's a porn shop with a grab-bag at the check-out counter. You simply reach in and grab a premium item.

C'mon, gpick. That name is so vague that there is no way anyone could guess what it is unless they get very lucky. You could have made it "reach out" and gotten exactly the same responses -- except maybe for my porn shop guess! ;-)

Self actualization and self empowerment would be my guess

Some sort of site to facilitate volunteer and community work...charitable and social..."reach in and give of yourself" concept?

On another note...I love the approach you've taken - but I agree with a few comments posted.....a bit to vague to guess ....could have given us one more bone to chew on :-)

From the name i would think its a Self Help & Personal development focussed website. It cd also be a virtual community facing similar issues.

Hello, Gary,

Given your background in high tech data communications & services (according to your profile), I'm going to guess that "Reach In" is a convolution of AT&T's old "Reach Out and Touch Someone" long-distance phone service slogan. With "Reach In," the emphasis is shifted away from telephones and toward the Web while also hinting that, thanks to Internet technology, there really is no "long distance" anymore.

Your phrase could also offer a double entendre. I'm thinking of a newbie who "takes the plunge" or otherwise "dives" into technological waters. In this case, in order to connect with others, the newbie is "reaching in" to share data in a whole new way.

Ow, this hurts my brain...

gpick,

Reach In? Getting highschool date flashbacks....just joking :P

The name is so vague and with no counter response it is hard to make an actual guess as to what the product is.

A statement like reach in gives me the idea of getting involved somehow. Hopefully this is what you had in mind.

For me, the only thing which comes to mind is a mental image of a hand reaching into a bag or purse.

Sounds to me like it's some sort of on-line organisation that does charitable or non-profit work- perhaps a routing service which launches "E-peals" for aid?
But, no doubt about it, it's a pretty vague line-REACH IN doesn't really bash the synapses without a context. It could just be a program to re_organise business databases, or to analyse internaut surfing trends

Ooh, unless it's like an on-line supermarket, encouraging you to Reach In to the screen for what you want. Is that a dumb idea?

Job or education assistance?
Reaching goals... reach in and get help...

Nah, I like the porn shop grab bag idea!!

Or, how about a pick pocket training camp for wayward boys and girls... sort of a modern day Oliver Twist?? Reach in for wallets and jewelry young chaps!

I also can see how everyone gets the idea of service to the community. The mental image is grabbing in a bag but... I see the community help program as well.

Thank you, everyone, for your response. You confirmed my assumptions. The verb Reach is often linked to the term Reach Out and most often used with public assistance program. Although our company does have a business networking solution, the Reach In name will be used for our Education Network and social networking solution, for students to Reach In.

I awarded 125 each to the two closest participants.

Thanks again. I am very surprised by the number of responses.

Frank Hurtte guessed what I was thinking. A networking site.

When I think of reach I think of two things #1 the old AT&T comercial "reach out and touch someone" (but if mgoodman is correct that could be taken way out of context :) ) and #2 i think of the Reach toothbrush. Since I dont think it has anything to do with #2 then I say what ever it is you are connecting/networking with others.

I'm very surprised that you expected anyone to figure out what Reach In is all about. I still don't get the connection to a social networking site.

Did you do any market research among your target audience with this one, or did you just throw darts at all the names you could think of?

Goodman,
Although I can appreciate the fact that you are the most active member of this forum, I don't think you understand the goal of the posting. I did not expect someone to guess the use of the name. My intention was to learn more about what people might think when they hear the name and invoke thought. (not psychics)

If you have an opinion on another name or how to appropriately conduct target segment market research prior to implementation, I am all ears

In this case, I think you might have thought you were playing crasswords.
