Hi Everyone -

It's that time of year when people make all sorts of promises to themselves about how they plan to live their lives differently in the coming year.

Does anyone still make New Year's resoultions? If so, what are your thoughts for 2007?

I'll start ... I promise to stay in better touch with friends around the globe. You'd think with e-mail this would be a simple matter, yet this year it hasn't been. It's not from lack of intention, 'cause I think of them, even smile when I see the date on the calendar and say, "Oh, today is Toshi's birthday" or "Tomorrow is Sten's anniversary". Yet, haven't found the time to drop them a note much less send a card.

What are your plans for 2007?

Carrie

We must first commit to take better care of ourselves. For we can not move forward with others without this. I will continue to grow by learning more about others, both personally and professionally.

If you know more about your clients, you can be more proficient at helping them achieve their goals. With their goals achieved...your goals are achieved.

Take care to know...

It has all been said
Thoughout all of time
Thoughts of a better tomorrow
With yesterdays left behind.

Should this be done with little thought
The new, as the old will be wrought
With fear of the unknown-as the world to the blind.

But looking ahead
With an eye on the psat
Provides a better opportunity
That the New Year will last-
Beyond the moment of the fall of the ball-
Or the harsh awakening on the floor in the hall.

Before going out to
Your night on the town
Look within before turning around
See what you see-in your own eyes
Lest you leave behind they who cry...forever.

A Joyous, Prosperous New Year to All.

Randall,

Thanks for your words of wisdom. They reminded me to turn on my favorite holiday CD. No, not Christmas music, the actual words of Auld Lang Syne as written down by Robert Browning from a Scottish song.

Should auld acquaintane be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should auld aquanitance be forgot
And days od auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, for auld lang syne,
Should auld acquantance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne.

We two have run about the hills
And gathered flowers fine
We've wandered many a weary road
Since auld lang syne.

We two have sported in the brook
from morning sun 'til dine
But seas between us have roared and swelled
Since auld lang syne.

For auld syne, for auld lang syne,
The seas betweeen us have roared and swelled
Since auld lang syne.

And here's a hand my trusty friend
And give a hand of thine.
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, for auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup of kindness
For auld lang syne.

(Note, I'm sure is Stevea responds, he'll correct my wording.)

Have a great year,
Carrie

Good lord Carrie, you are getting to know me too well!

As luck would have it, I’m waiting for “The bells” To celebrate New Year as my wife is Scottish. Back home, traditionally they don’t start any real celebrations until about 11.30pm and little is drunk until just before 12.00. In her Mother’s family’s old place this was a pain in the ass if you were looking for the party and had arrived early as you never which bit of the house to go to, so guests were often found wandering the corridors totally lost several hours later. Come to think of it, it was one of the few places to offer first-time overnight visitors a map so that they could find breakfast!

Auld Lang Syne was written by Rabbie (Robbie or Robert) Burns, Scotland’s most famous poet, in 1788. Robert Browning may well have heard his poems, but I’ve got no record that he wrote one down and published it!

That was a pretty good attempt at the words: - I believe that these are the traditional ones and after it is the loose translation into modern UK English:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp
And surely I'll be mine
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere
And gies a hand o' thine
And we'll tak a right gude-willie-waught,
For auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

Translation:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And times gone by?

CHORUS:

For times gone by, my dear,
For times gone by,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For times gone by.

And surely you'll buy your pint cup
And surely I'll buy mine
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For times gone by.

REPEAT CHORUS

We two have run about the hills,
And pulled the daisies fine;
But we've wandered many a weary foot,
Since times gone by.

REPEAT CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
Since times gone by.

REPEAT CHORUS

And there's a hand my trusty friend
And give us a hand o' thine
And we'll take a right good-will draught,
For times gone by.

REPEAT CHORUS

I just wonder how many people in Scotland actually know both the words and the meaning. I was told them at St Andrews by a guest speaker who was a Londoner, a British Naturalised industrialist of Pakistani origins who just happened to be a Burns Scholar – so we invited him up to do the address to the haggis on Burn’s Night!

Best wishes, a happy new year and I’ll add a posting of my own later!

Steve -

I just knew you'd have something to add. And, you're right, it was Robert Burns; I messed that up completely. And, I should know better having visited his house in Scotland several times.

Thanks for the update and have a happy time.

Good grief... I have never been able to understand the words of ALS let alone know what they meant.

Thanks SteveA for bringing clarity and meaning to my New Year (it's already 10:30 AM here on 1-1-07)

My resolutions for 2007 are all about balance:

1. Work only on value-based fees. Having read Alan Weiss' book on the subject, I have confirmed all my own worst fears about pitching consulting projects based on "time and materials" rates. Working on a value-based fee basis will allow me to engage higher value projects that require less time to complete, allowing me to spend more time how I want, rather than running around performing drudge work. What I do is not about how long it takes, it's about the value I add.

2. Spend more time reading books. I used to read voraciously but over the past year have sourced more and more information from electronic media. Books give added depth and insight, and are more absorbing than many other forms of reading, an so provide great mental recreation time, I find.

3. Increase my personal fitness. We're all getting older, and if we don't keep the machine in good working order, it might break down at a most inconvenient time.

4. Allocate more time to my family. After all, these are the people I'm been doing all of this for...

5. Continue to try to do my bit towards sustainability. Generate less greenhouse gas, use less water and other scarce material resources, and try to become resource and emission neutral. It's a tough one, but we can't wait for governments to save our blue planet, we have to take steps at an individual level to do whatever we can. Great changes occur just one person at a time.

Peace, health and prosperity for 2007 to all my friends at MP & KHE.

Cheers!

There was a great quip in a crossword puzzle today, attributed to comedian Joey Adams:

May all your troubles last as long as your new year's resolutions.

That's my wish for all of my friends at MarketingProfs. ;-)

Happy New Year, everyone!

The crossword puzzle, for those who are interested, was constructed by Elizabeth Gorski and appeared in the Los Angeles Times, syndicated by Tribune Media Services.

Hi Carrie,

I tried to send you an email a few months back but to no avail. I think you are too busy. By the way how did your annual Book thingy go?

Now regarding New Year's Resolutions...I agree with Randall. We have to take better care of ourselves and I'm doing just that. So here's a little poem to help really say how I feel.

MaKe nO reSOLUTIONS ONLY nEW HABITS!

But Resolutions can not be forged,
for it's with habits that we gorge.
upon this life entrenched in Habit,

"Mine in 2006, no Trix, Silly Rabbit."

So now that all my Trix are gone,
I must live in truth and find my own.
Inner me that lives within,
my prayers are that I'm FREE from sin.

Which in Roman times in archery was to miss the mark!
I hope I hit my goals and somehow spark!
That deeper thing that causes me to LIVE
in Love my friend that is what I re-SOLVE to give.

& If I can give it then I'll nab-it
and live no more slave to my hab-it.
That keeps me far from who I am,
or who you ARE, oh gentle lamb.

For habits we are all creatures of
tis why marketing uses triggers round love.
To move us from our inward parts
with emotional things that TOUCH our hearts.

So step back a minute
search your heart deep with in it.
That's where you'll find what you should determine to DO
and if it is good for all mankind,
On this you should make up your mind
and run towards it as fast as you can because it must be good for YOU!

But Resolutions are not habits
that's why so many can not have it.
So this year I'll resolve to move above
the lowly hatred's and just serve with LOVE.
....byderemiah

Back to my rant...Without some experience, often tragedy and sometimes new births of children or new commitments in our relationships we can not muster up the ability to be shocked out of our lowly habitual routines.

My resolution last year began in early December 2005. It began with a resolution I've been working to get better at every year. That's to do as Randall said above...Take better care of myself. Not just my physical body but my mental mind and my spiritual self.

I resolved first to organize the traps of the physical body and to divide and conquer.

I am in extremely good health and eat in moderation. But my resolution was to refine my eating choices more closely.

Resolving to use the template God had given the children of Israel for things they should not eat. I removed the eating of pork which includes bacon, ham pork chops, ribs, all shell fish like crab, lobster, crayfish, squid and things like catfish, including the eating of fat from animals. If you'd like to know why shoot me an email and I'll happily tell you.

Then I resolved to increase the number of books I needed to read, to mentor more children, to teach others how to avoid the habits of bitterness, jealously & envy. On top of that to show others more love and how to be more giving of love by doing lovely things. And finally I resolved to pray more, journal more and share more publicly the things that make my life and could make your life too more happy.

The end result is that I'm going into 2007 with one year of fasting from the foods above and an increase in prayer and journaling. I've been fasting from TV now since 1998 and if I'm lucky in a good year I generally don't see more than an hour of TV a month. And most of that is as I'm passing the TV shows others are watching.

The result is that I'm more healthier physically, mentally and spiritually than I have ever been. Increasing My fruit & vegetable in take and decreasing my sugar in take has had an extremely positive effect on my eliminating. I was always very positive and couldn't believe that I'm even more positive and happier now than I've ever been.

So if I could suggest make no resolutions. Only efforts to change your habits. If you “Invent” your opportunity YOU WILL most definitely create your future. I'm only an email away from you if you need my help at anytime. Is there anything else I can do for you?

Your Servant, Deremiah, *CPE (Customer Passion Evangelist)

Carrie,

Y2K made me realize that a date on the calendar is meaningless as many cultures (including those of some of my clients) have different calendars (Chinese, Jewish etc). Over the years it's almost been fun to follow. I keep this one on my desktop:
http://www.earthcalendar.net/index.php

I do make several commitments and put them in my LWP (Lord Willing Planner), which is separate from my daily planner, but things like exercising more I start mid-December so I have a running start. Last research I saw said if you do something for 21 days straight it will become a habit.

Best wishes to everyone here!

1. Learn how to delegate -
Determine your personal Return on Investment, and
delegate accodingly.

2. Promote your business -
If you want new customers, promotion is a priority.
Hire an expert. Make a maketing plan.

3. Make planning a weekly event -
Planning is vital. So why do it just yearly or
quarterly? You'll feel more focused and relaxed.

4. Learn something new -
It'll add a new dimension to your life. You may meet
interesting people. Try achieving a healthy work-life
balance.

5. Join a organisation / group -
It'll spark new ideas, refine old ones. You'll make
new contacts. You'll learn new things.

6. Give back to your community -
Find a cause that matters to you. Join an NGO. Be a
mentor, volunteer, or make regular donations.

7. Put time for yourself -
"Meet with yourself" daily for some minutes.
Introspect. All work & no play results is a recipe for
stress.

8. Set realistic goals -
Realistic Goal setting is a valuable habit. Goals
should be measurable. On achievement, reward yourself.

9. Don't make do, get a new one -
Is there something lacking - an extra employee, a new
PC, that's stopping your success? Get it, don't
postpone.

10. Drop what's not working -
All products aren't super sellers. If a technique or
relationship isn't working. Move on. Something better
will turn up.

Hi Everyone -

I do see something of an emerging theme here, started off as one might expect by Randall. Be kind to yourself.

It sounds so simple, yet aren't all the best ideas really quite simple? And, when I review all the other comments, it is at the foundation of most of what else has been written.

Deremiah, I have written to you separately. I know I owed you an email. You were simply falling into the category of friends I was not taking the time to write to.

But, if I follow the suggestions and am nicer to me, I will be nicer to everyone. Tried it a bit yesterday. Spent only a minimal amount of time working, about 4 hours on volunteer paperwork, and then did something I've wanted to do for ages -- toyed around with rubber stamps, ink pads, and made cards. Then, I read ... curled up under an afghan with a pot of tea.

Happy 2007,
Carrie

I think writing my NYR's late tells you quite a bit about me already, so I guess you wouldn't be surprised if I told you I am going to make deadlines a priority? I always get them done, but just barely. eeeking isn't fun.

Now for the biggie. ta-daaa! I will clean my office. I will get the dogs to put their toys in the basket, and I will file away the stuff I probably should throw out, and I will update my rolodex and take out the dead people cause I don't think I'll need them anymore.

Then I will take some time and start riding again, A big old horse, like my last big gelding. My legs will probably collapse after the first 15 minutes (it has been 7 years since I last rode). But I can't give it up. My son has been begging me to ride with him again. I can't refuse that!

And then I will do something kind for someone else every day. That's my real New Year's Resolution.

Oh yea, one more thing. I resolve to get a new puppy this year. Another chubby yellow Labrador and we will name him Bubba.

I certainly don't miss the big hair days. But, in 1987 I was still in Thailand, and it wasn't a trend then.

I'm beginning to see some common threads in some of these resolutions. Is this the product of collective mind-think or simply that as adults, we all start to have siilar foibles?

Not in that order particularly ...
