Tagline For New Realtor
Posted By: docmuller* on 1/7/2007 2:33 PM (CST) 500 Points
I am a new realtor working for an independent company (not Remax, Century 21, etc...) I need a tagline to assist with advertising. Something that will stick in customers minds. Everything I come up with seems to just be cheesy, so I am looking for some help. My name is Rob Muller (Short U, not like the pasta)

docmuller, welcome to the forum.

If you will read through the "Search Questions" area, in the column to the right of this post, you will observe this question has been asked/answered hundreds of times. It become difficult to be creative that many times, when the needs of the poster are identical.

However, as you read thiese archives, you are certain to find something that will meed your needs.

I did see that this questions has been asked over and over, but let me maybe clarify a little bit. While there are a ton of taglines in the already answered questions, that is part of the problem, they are all variations of the taglines I see 10 times a day. I think I should have been clearer with my question, I am looking for something that maybe has my name involved, or even the area I want to concentrate on most (either Bridgemill which is a neighborhood, or Canton which is the city, or even Cherokee which is the county) sorry I was not clearer

I don't think the problem is that you weren't clear. I think it's that you haven't thought through the positioning issues and therefore won't know a winning tagline suggestion if/when it shows up.

Who is your prime target audience? Why should someone use your services instead of another realtor's? What makes you any different from, and better than, all the other realtors in your area? What unique benefit might a client realize if he/she came to you for real estate services?

The tagline usually has a goal: to communicate to the target audience why they should use your services. If you can't answer that question, how are we supposed to do that?

If you just want to "stick in customers' minds," you can try "Rob Muller is a jerk!" They'll probably remember that, because nobody else has used it and it's kind of intrusive. My guess is that's not really what you want.

Think about how you'll evaluate the suggestions we come up with, and how you'll know when you have a winner. If you can do that, and share it with us, there's a lot better chance that we can actually help you. Otherwise, it's just a drill to see how cute we can be, and none of us will ever know whether we're really helping you or not.

Once again I must not have been clear, I am looking for a tagline, not a critique from a pompous ass. It sounds like you are annoyed that I asked about a tagline. I have a comprehensive marketing plan. I have made sure to differentiate myself from the competition, offering services most of them simply don't (every house gets its own website, and virtual tour, I am also a licensed real estate appraiser, certified home inspector, and top producing loan officer, Why go through all that work if I only concentrate on real estate, because I want to be familiar and be able to help with all aspects of your real estate transaction) I have target areas that receive more attention than others, and the advertising, direct mail, etc is tailored slightly differently to each area. I have worked out deals with local merchants to provide special offers which I include in my advertising, I offer discounts to military, police, fireman and teachers, if you are FSBO I will reimburse you once I sell your home, and many other methods of advertising I am trying to see what works best so I can concentrate on those methods. If you can fit all that in a tag line. perfect. I have been researching some of the established, top producing realtors in my area, to try and see what works, and one thing I noticed is they all have some sort of short and sweet tagline. So excuse me if in my ignorance I stumbled on this site and thought I could buy a few points and see if some people more creative than I could come up with something for me without getting slammed or being called a jerk. I didn't ask for anyone to come up with an entire marketing plan for me for $20, I simply asked if anyone could think of something catchy using the info I provided, if that is beneath you feel free to skip my question.

Rob,

Taglines are one of the hardest marketing tools to develop - as you’re figuring out. I ran into the same problem when I was trying to name my brokerage. While in the naming phase, I came up with a tag line to use on my temporary cards that would allow me to begin doing business without a company name. I ended up keeping the tag line since it fit my philosophy to a T.

Your best bet is to take a good hard look at your mission statement (I assume since you did a full marketing plan that you have a mission statement) and think about your vision for the future. Trying to do too much often will give the impression that you are a "jack of all trades, master of none". Since you can't be all things to all people, I would suggest you focus your tag line on the things/philosophies that resonate the most with you.

Of course, if you want to go the all service route, you can try playing around with omnipotent tag lines. Here are a few free ones off the top of my head:

Doc/Rob Muller – Your real estate “go to” guy

RM your real estate MD

STOP! The Doc is here!

Of course, if the “doc” in your email address has to do with documents, I guess the MD avenue won’t be the best.

Again, trying to do everything may not be the message you want to send. Pick one or two things you do well and work from that. You could also hire a marketing consultant to come up with an identity for you. Many in the industry go that route.

You can also use your tag line (once you get one) on the front of your cards and give additional details on the back. Another idea is to use a logo for your identity instead of a tag line. That way, you accomplish the branding I’m assuming you’re looking for while communicating your ideas. One more cliché and I’m done: A picture is worth a thousand words…

Best of luck to you.

Great Ideas Katrina.

Rob this is a forum of professionals. We respect each other here. Many of us are very busy and don't have the time to sit around getting into a flaming war. When you ask questions here, the more you are able to share with us, the better your answers will be. And before you go call mgoodman a pompous ass, please read his profile. He is one on the most prolific members here and has helped numerous entrepreneurs. The questions he asked were very relevant. And if you don't have the answers to them, I highly recommend taking a few days to figure out the answers to them.

goodman wasn't calling you a jerk, he was making a point. he was saying that if all you want is for people to remember your name you can just put something crazy... jerk just happened to be what came to his mind. he could have said:

"I'll eat poo if I can't sell your home!"

the point is that a good tagline will set you apart from your competition. when people read it they should say "Oh! That's why I should use Muller to sell my home!". there's more to being memorable that being clever.

answer the questions he asked you and take his advice, and you'll be much better off.

however, i don't get how you can claim to have a comprehensive marketing strategy in place if you don't even know your farm area yet. are you focusing on commercial or residential? do you have any buyers agents working for you, or do you do all the work? how many years have you been in business? how many listings have you sold? do you have any awards?

we hardly know anything about you or what you are trying to achieve. if you want us to sit here in the dark and see who can be the cutest you're wasting our time and yours.

To everyone who actually answered the question:

I wanted to thank you all very much. Your answers were all great and at the very least have given me a great direction to go in if I end up using a tagline. Your ideas and creativity were exactly what was hoping to find when I joined this site, and I was not disappointed. I especially want to thank Katrina for not only answering the question but also including helpful advice.

To everyone else...

rp and msumner:

For the third time I already have answered those questions, and had no desire to spell everything out on here. I simply wanted some ideas for a tagline involving my name and real estate. This is not my entire marketing plan, nor should I have to explain my entire plan to get a simple answer. I know my farm area, and I have already addressed all the questions you and your hero are asking. Trust me if I was looking for a slogan to base my advertising around, you would have received a much more detailed request. I might even pay some big money to an advertising firm, send them my marketing plan, answer one of those long questionnaires they have, and let them handle it.....Oh Wait I have already done that..

The fact that I was toying with something more laid back, maybe even catchy or cute to throw on some Frisbees and stress balls apparently has to be justified by attaching my business plan. Amazing how I am wasting your time by not being specific enough for your tastes, but you have plenty of time to throw me a 1000 words of unsolicited advice without answering the question.

and yes I am grouchy. I quit smoking last month, And I have time to sit here and respond because I had a kick ass couple of months to end the year.

anyway I am done, thanks to everyone even if we got off on the wrong foot.

Rob, I'm sorry you misunderstood my post and its intent. You're entitled to be as grouchy as you want. Maybe I wasn't clear when I said that the tagline needs to have a reason for being, not just "be catchy."

At any rate, don't let your annoyance keep you from using the collective wisdom of this group. It's a terrific group and it's generous in providing assistance to people who ask. Just be sure you give us enough information to go on if you want our best input.

Good luck.

i haven't been on the forum long, but what i understand is this is a place where professionals are kind enough to perform a free service to the community that they usually get paid a lot of money for.

the way you are responding to these professionals shows your complete lack of appreciation. some of the experts didn't answer your question because it wasn't enough information to give you a quality tagline. if you can't see that you are very nearsighted. and if you don't like their response... well... you didn't pay for it so you have no right to insult them.

just saying that you're looking for something catchy to throw on gimmicky marketing items gives us more to go on than "I need a real estate tagline, and I won't give you any details even though I have a well-thought-out marketing strategy".

good luck with everything though. and try to cheer up... nobody likes a grouchy agent biting their head off when they don't like any of the houses you printed off the Matrix.

(btw, it's clear you know your farm area when you can't decide if it is a neighborhood of a few hundred homes, a city of a few thousand homes, or a county of a hundred thousand homes. not to mention in the 20 years i've been around real estate i've never heard someone claim an entire county as their farm area unless their marketing budget is a few million dollars.)
