Posted By: kallighane on 1/22/2007 5:03 AM (CST) 1125 Points
I offer writing services which include resume, proofreading, word processing services for company literature, letter writing etc. How do I get this into one name so it appeals to companies and individuals?

Hi,
Ideally do some revenue analysis and decide what your cash cows are. Then brand your shop on that service and then cross sell the rest of the services to existing customers. And shd you decide to advertise online, then a generic brand wont help either. For instance 'Resume Flash' if that happens to be your cash cow.

Shd you go for generic branding then just the name will not be enough, you will need a tagline too.

Hi,

Just happened to see your post and I have an idea. It's not based on anything technical, but I thought it to be quite relevant:

CopyCorrect

A logo could be quite easy too; maybe 2 Cs in a circle - like the R copyright symbol.

A bit of a spin on "copy right", or the idea of "writing copy".

Regards,
Lucy

These are all great responses! Just want to be sure the "average" person know the meaning of " copy" as the business name will catch the reader. I don't want people to think I run a " xerox" service and not read my ad. What do you think?

If you search online for these types of services, they are all under "word processing" and additional services are listed beneath that search subject.

I would stick with word processing in my company name and go with something like

Accurate Word Processing

Reliable Word Processing

Dependable Word Processing

Those are words which talk to the client because that is what they are looking for when seeking out a service - accurate, dependable, reliable.

You can add a tagline to get a little more descriptive about value-added services

Hi kallighane, welcome to the forum!
The first propossal that came to my mind was: (Your Name or initials)+LiveCheck.

It stress positively a main differentiator of yours: As a live person -instead of software- you can vitalize words, add a personal touch and common sense and it does not enclose your services to a specific document (like resume, technical writings, etc) instead it enforces the scope of what your clients can submit: a written document needing for a checking test. I can picture in my mind your logo, using a check (probably green) that stress (again) the concept of breath
you promote to your customerīs written words.

Iīd like to continue the exercise, and to do a better thoughtful propossal, I will find more valuable if you share to us:

- What are your main differentiators that make you stand from competition?
- What are the needs you fulfill for your clients?
- How do you want to be perceived among your clients?

I support the idea sgosh gave, you can use your business name as a descriptive element and rely the persuasive power of your brand on a catchy tag line.

what about something like:

Since your business is diverse, you could try marketing for resumes under "Resume Professor" (Professor makes you sound like a highly educated resume writer), and then continue with the same theme Word Processing Professor.

Another idea for attracting students (if you are a woman) would be Word Processing Diva, for something fun, and maybe have a cartoon logo.

How about your name with a subtitle 'Writer/Editor'. It's not the name that needs to be catchy but the work behind it. If you already have business lined up, then your work should speak for itself. And plus, keeping it this simple allows you to work for just about anyone without the name over defiining your audience.

A name alone isn't going to get you work. Your name should reflect who you are and what the customer is going to expect. Your brand will be what you deliver in meeting those expectations. And if you are a good enough writer, you should be able to come up with a name that really defines who you are and what you can deliver. There's nothing wrong with wanting help but I always like to know more about the person besides the services they are offering.

I'll shoot out a couple of quick thoughts...

IdeaWorks

Commas, Inc.

Hope these help and best of luck. Feel free to contact me if you'd like any more advice or design assistance.

Best regards,

There was a TV show in the 60s called: "Have Gun, Will Travel"

To cover the broad services you have described maybe something like: "Have Pen, Will Travel"

Of course the pen is now a keyboard and the travel is now virtual. This could be a part of your branding story, the travel is in real time.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Many of the above posts are words of wisdom. (Hey, that's not a bad one either!)

But given your diversity(it ISN'T just copy) and the "business" common denominator for MOST of your services, I'd like something in the vein of:

The Writing Department
The Writing Staff
Communic-8 (Got eight services to pay it off?)
Corporate Scribe
WordsWorth
Write There

But MOST IMPORTANT --and my last one is a small violation of what i"m about to say, but has other redeeming qualitites---STAY AWAY from the hideous, trite, and cutesy 'Mr. (or Ms.) Write" or "The Write Stuff" kind of puns.

I feel that any cutesy name will turn away your company/corporate customers. I would suggest something simple and to the point...

(Using KB as a placeholder for your initials)

KB Professional Writing
"Don't click send without it."

Or

All Professional Writing

Or

KB Business Writing

Or

KB Writing Services

If you'll be using the web to advertise, you'll have several options on how you want to target audiences. Your website content can be designed to catch some of the keywords that people are searching for, it doesn't have to be in the name of your company. So you can still target customers looking for resume help and other services that you provide.

Writing encompasses many things, proofing, copy editing, wordsmithing, etc . . . But ultimately it is all about one word that has been mentioned 2 or 3 times by all respondents . . . that word is "content."

In the emarketing world, we're all looking for content that will help our SEO ranking, content that will make people aware of our business, and content that will help us to make money . . .

I would focus your company name around the term "content" not only because your content can be catcy . . . but it can also be cathing and captivating. Therefore my recommendations are the following.

+ Catchy Content: Our copy catches customers
+ Captivating Content: Our copy captivates
+ Conversion Content: For copy that converts
+ Content Wonks - We're copy conscious
+ Conscious Copy - We elevate your message

Hope this helps.

Best,

I think it is imperative to know exactly who your target market is to get a better handle on what you think they will respond to in a business name and what kind of font logo, etc. to use (upscale, fun, young, classic). So I would try to nail that down with a little more clarity.
If you think about it, everything in the universe is purely based on words. So I think adapting something like that into a tag line would be optimum. But just for an example:

name: WordAll
tag line: editing services for the foundation of you - your words.

name: Word Watch
tag line: keep an eye on the prize

name: Word Results
tag line: helping your words reach their potential

Hope this helps. Best of luck.
