Coffee bars are right up there with hairdressers for having huge scope for creative naming.

How about...

Italian
Caffe e Cucina
Via Roma
Vita Roma
La Dolce Vita
La Vita Latte
Vita Espresso

English
Rush
Vibe
Java
Aroma

Latin
Ars Longa Vita Brevis (Hard work, short life)

German
Mach Pause (Take a break)
Kaffee und Kuchen (Coffee & Cake)
Imbissstube (Snack bar, the only word I know in any language that legitimately has three S's in a row!)

Where are you thinking of situating this coffee bar?

Well, the two biggest chains in my area are Starbucks (obviously), and Caribou Coffee. Notice the deer thing? Buck... Caribou... I'm thinking you can choose a name that naturally competes with the major players.

Picture it...

Cheetah Cafe
"We devour the competition!"

You could keep it simple

"The Coffee Bar"
"The Coffee Room"

Im more a Red Bull drinker...in fact I have never really drank a real cup of coffee, but I believe they saw you brew coffee so maybe "The Coffee Brewery"

idea for a slogan
"Your one stop Coffee Shop"

Good Luck with that!!

JoJo, what happened to the furniture biz from 2005? If you are still attached to furniture, perhaps your coffee shop could sell coffees AND furniture.

Sounds crazy, but just think of a college-town coffee house where every piece of furniture has a big price tag on it. Maybe no one would buy, maybe someone would. The point is, just for fun, someone COULD buy any piece of furniture in there. This certainly would establish an ecclectic look to the place.

So, for a shop name, how do you say "Coffee and Couches" or "The Coffee Couch" in any of the Romance languages?

I like what one of the posters said about hair places--I've always wanted to collect in one book the wacky names of hair salons...my favorite is Curl up and Dye.

All that to say, to me, the name has to spring from what slice of the audience you think you can attract. Are you fighting Starbucks around the corner? Do you have a niche audience you'd like to attract? Is there something special about the way you brew coffee, or the ambiance you bring, or the attitude you project? Do you have a geographic niche (if I was close to a university, e.g., I may play off--or against--that.

Rather than being cutesy (like my "Dye" friends, but no slam against the reasonable Euro names our colleagues have suggested) think about that. Perhaps if you give us some of that character, we may better help you select a name that helps embody and brand it for you.

Queequeg's Cafe -

Queequeg was once a prince from a South Sea island who stowed away on a whaling ship in search of adventure. Like Coffe, he is a composite of elements of African, Polynesian, and Islamic, Christian, Native American cultures. He is brave and generous, and enables Ishmael to see that race has no bearing on a man’s character.

Cool or what!?

This is a name not to be forgotten and discussed often!

ps In case you didn't know - he was Starbuck’s skilled harpooner and Ishmael’s best friend.

GL making your mark!

The name has to be memorable (as some have indicated above). Random coffee antiquations really don't work in this industry as they are easily forgotten. The best coffee shop that I have ever visited in my journeys was a shop in San Diego called the Pannikin. I don't really know what the name meant, but it intrigued me and I never forgot it.

The rules to this game:
1. name must be pretty short, the longer it is, the more likely it will be forgotten.
2. Simple, but not too simple...complex can be dangerous, after all it is a coffee shop (sorry nova, I loved the book though)
3. It must have some connection to the market, the product or the area...people need a reason to believe.

focus on your product and what will make you different from the other coffee shops in your area...think about specifically who your customers are going to be and come up with a name that means something to them...but what ever you do

DON'T SETTLE FOR A RANDOM NAME

best of luck

Jeremy...then another 2 syllable name (KWEE KWAY) like Starbucks wouldn't work you say?

Rigid rules are so artificial and a coffee shop name like Starbucks proves it!

Ride the wave I say....

Here's an idea:
"The Perk" and then "Perk U Later"could be the afternoon special brew you offer to increase traffic after lunch or dinner.
