How To Become A Marketing Manager?

Posted by knemethy on 125 Points
My career plan is to become a marketing manager in financial business preferably.
One year I had been working in small market research company in Slovakia. Now, I am working already three mounts in TNS as project manager. I care about different clients and their needs in market research. I hope in this field I have sufficient knowledge and experience. My idea is that I need to know and gain experience in part of using advertisement, brand management, media buying etc.
I am looking for opportunities to develop in such areas, I think mainly in using media mix and media buying.
Which positions are most suitable for gaining experience which is needed for being successful marketing manager? I see some possibilities like account manager in advertising company, maybe in some medial agency. Or will be better to concentrate on client side and try to find some junior or assistant position in this side?
Thank you so much in advance!
Karol

They say you would get more exposure working on agency side because of many different marketing projects pertaining to different industries compared to just working on client side.

I'm not sure though, i could be wrong!

    Good luck in your career!

I would try to get a job at a adv agency to move into the practical experience of using your market research and project management into a real world translation. As above person said, build on different experiences of marketing as well as different medium of media.

Go to some major cities like NY, London, to get experience that will be translated in many countries.

    good luck.

Get lots of experience. Be keen to do extra/new stuff and learn more in the process. Get yourself a good mentor - someone you can learn and get feedback from. Ask them to measure your performance/skills. Get some marketing qualifications if you don't have already. Network with other people. Be enthusiastic and keep trying... because eventually you WILL succeed!

    Hi Karol,

it wasn't clear whether you were looking for a marketing manager position on the agency side or client side. You may have some challenges in making the switch from agency to client. But it can be done. As someone who has worked on both the client and agency sides in marketing research, it was a bit challenging to make the switch (client to agency, in my case) especially with recruiters.

The more you can prove during an interview that you have the skills and experience that is required on the client side is key, so try to learn as much as you can about the responsibilties and skills required as a marketing manager.

In the interim, you may want to see if you can get on some advertising accounts within TNS, maybe doing some adverstising research. I know TNS is a fairly large company which may have opportunities that you can take advantage of to build your skills. Also, you will get a chance to meet clients who may be able to help you eventually in your career search.

    Hope this helps!
