Where Do I Go Study Advertising?
Posted By: heyjack* on 6/18/2004 1:05 AM (CST) 250 Points

I finished my undergraduate studies in advertising and marketing this May. I have interned at few agencies and currently work as a research assistant for a professor in the University that I graduated from. My interest lies in the research and planning side of advertising. I had applied to the VCU Adcenter’s (adcenter.vcu.edu) newly introduced program in creative media planning and just received an acceptance letter. As far as I have heard, it is a good place to study. However it’s a 2 year program and the tuition per year is around $16,350 which makes the tuition for the 2 years masters program around $33,000. I was wondering if Adcenter is a really good place to get a masters degree in Advertising? Is there a better place to get a masters degree in advertising? My main concern is not the money, but I want to make sure I am spending it at the right place for education. I really couldn’t find any ranking information for graduate programs in advertising. And you all are welcome to share any information that you think might help me. I thank everyone responding to my queries in advance.

If you are questioning your first choice, I would take some time to check out other schools. Tuition for graduate studies is expensive. Also if the school is just starting a program, I would try to find someplace that has been teaching awhile. Things might change before you finish.

I got my Advertising Master's at Emerson in Boston, but I am not necessarily advocating that school. UT Austin has a graduate ad program; so does Boston U. I like the schools that run their own agencies, giving you semi-real world experience.

Try www.gradschools.com to find the complete list by subject.

Start with books, read more, then keep reading. Other good places to study advertising are magazines. T.V. radio. newspapers. and on the streets. perhaps do some pro bono work in an agency.
You will get all the theory you need and practical experience and probably know just as much, if not more, than any school can possibly offer.

the best place to find out which university has the best courses is to contact the local offices of ad agencies and ask them for their opinion. these are the people who actually hire and who have studied from these universities and hence they will be able to give you the most worthwile suggesstions. BUt get opinions of atleast 6-7 people before making a decision.
I would suggest that you do not look up at online web rankings of colleges as they may not be true to facts.

Hello,

Has anybody gone to Emerson College in Boston for their Masters in Marketing or Advertising? Is it a reputed school? Does it matter that it is a college and not a University?

I am looking for a one year Masters of Science or Arts program in these fields in the US. It would be great if someone could suggest reputed schools that offer these..

Thank you for your time and attention!

Suchita
