The SAARF LSM (Living Standards Measure) has become the most widely used marketing research tool in Southern Africa. It divides the population into eight LSM groups, 8 (highest) to 1 (lowest). LSM-7 and LSM-8 are divided into Low and High respectively

You can find out more about them at http://www.saarf.co.za/

LSM is a useful, non racial market segmentation tool which categorises consumers into eight bands depending on product usage, access to amenities and degree of urbanisation. These bands are PROGRESSIVE AFFLUENTS, ESTABLISHED AFFLUENTS, EMERGING MARKET, YOUNG ASPIRERS etc.

I hope this helps.
