Service Marketing Or Product Marketing For The Indian Market?

Which is best for the Indian Market "Product Marketing or Service Marketing"?

My first impression is to say both are important.

But in light of India's current economy, product marketing is probably the most lucrative business to get into.

I concur with Jett - India has such a large population and infrastructure continues to improve. FMCG would definately be attractive - but be cautious of the global CPG companies and the product lines they focus on. Make sure you have a meaningful point of difference if you are going to take on Colgate, Lever, or P&G.

You might do well to look at products which "shadow" improvments in infrastucture and enhance the quality of life. Large categories such as small appliances, home improvement, and the like come to mind.

Next - you might do well to look at the rapid expansion of India's service businesses (outsourcing of Call Centers and Sorftware development) and think about going the B2B route and supporting these expansions in the metro areas with office supplies and the like.

Finally - if you are leaning to services marketing - focus on my prior comment. India is THE destination for outsourcing of Software Development and Customer Call Centers. Either get into this area directly (which requires a strong understanding of global marketing of B2B services) or think about the local service businesses that will be staffing this industry and providing the infrastructure (including office design.construction, accounting services, janitorial, telecom, etc.).

I do not, properly, get, what yor question means.

Still, i would say it is the product marketing, which is going to rule the Indian market.

When i say that, i mean, that, the major chunk of Indian population is not still sure of what services they need and whether, they need them at all.

Also, Indian market is not that high on services, they are, basically, into product marketing.

First of all,ina market as diverse and dynamic as India, you cannot generalize by making statements such as "product marketing is good for India" or "Service marketing is good for India" etc.

In India, the rural-urban divide is phenomenal esp. in Metro cities. In the urban areas, the "product marketing" sector is highly saturated and if you do wish to enter into the fray, you shall be facing stiff competition. However, you take one look at the rapid growth rate in the services market and it clearly shows immense potential for good returns on investment. Not only major sectors like Telecom and BPO services are booming but also relatively smaler sectors are growing at a phenomenal rate,e.g., security agencies and courier services. Hence, in the urban markets it is better to invest in the service marketing sector.
In the rural markets however, there is still a huge scope for grwoth and expansion and a vast untapped market in the "product marketing" sector. With distribution networks nad infrastructure getting better, it gives you a chance to reach out to the rural areas and sell your products. It will still take a few years before service marketing becomes lucrative in the rural sector.
