You will get some good ideas here, there are some sharp contributors, however, I think to really help you we need to know more...

ie. what kind of electrical work?

how big are you?
what is your advantage over the competition?
if it is a one man show, what are you like?
what is your business philosophy?
your specialty?
etc.

feed us dogs just a few more crumbs and maybe we can crap for you....

Hi John,

What makes your firm special to its customers?

Answering this question will help the group provide more insight.

Also, please provide information regarding your business:
- type of customer (res/comm)
- type of work (new const/remode/repair/etc)
- size, location, years in business

Thanks,
Rick

I agree with above comments – there is no generic slogan that will work for you.

Here are a couple of links that might be useful.

What about...

"Trust us to keep you humming."
"Keeping things humming since 1936."
"Switch to a trusted electrician."
"Our customers never switch."
"Your partners in circuit."
"In circuit since 1936."
"Our integrity is on the line."

No, wait, that last one may sound iffy! =)

I think that you have to look at your core strengths and what makes you better than the other guy and you also have to look at what do your consumers want from an electrician?

Can you list these for us?

I think you slogan will have to capture some of both, probably more of what the market wants in an electrical contractor, they need to hear what they want to hear from you about yourself....

couldn't resist:

"A Full Service Electrical Contractor & Trusted Partner Since 1936"

Pretty generic, but without more data from customers, USP's, etc., this broad of an approach is probably what you're going to hear the most of. Then again, it could be just what's needed.

Gather some, mock them up, survey them with clients in all stakeholder groups such as consumers, General Contractors, etc...

I thought this one by SRyan was very good...
"Our customers never switch"

but what about
"Turning our customers on since 1963"
"Switched on since 1963"
"Switch to us and be turned on"

More ideas to inspire your own braincyclone...

"You can trust in our power"
"Your current partner to trust"
"The best for your current project"
"Run with us"

Guess I'd better stop now before I get carried away! The later the hour gets, the stranger the ideas become...

If I understand correctly, Rankins is not selling electricity but installing the wiring and components neccessary for electricity and my guess it that he is going to be dealing with general contractors a lot since he is an electrical contractor...

is that correct?

the above slogans are good however, they sound like a power company, not an electrical contractor....

rankin am I correct?

When it comes to electricity, I don't think I want to see sparks...sparks are a result of faulty work and no customer wants to see sparks!

Having said that, how about...

"Building relationships since 1936."

"Dedicated since 1936."

Picture of two guys in electricians clothes (butt crack optional): one is presentable in appearance with Rankins name on shirt, the other is covered in soot, hair straight out, (maybe clothes smouldering if that's not too over the top), etc.

Copy: "It's not hard to tell the good electricians from the bad! Rankins - serving you since 1936."

Hi guys,

Maybe I'm missing the point here - but how many
of the slogans demonstrate an outright benefit to the prospect?

Go over all the slogans and apply the "so what" test.
For example;

"Your current partner to trust" - SO WHAT!
Tell me what my benefit is - just keeping asking "so what" and you'll eventually get there. Cutsy and clever don't work - benefits do.

Hi John,

There have been some really creative ideas suggested here, but I think member “dinobia” was the first to really hit the nail on the head.

Your slogan has an important role: It supports or affirms your company’s line of business. It expands what the company name and icon logo can’t tell the customer. And it’s a chance to sell a benefit without having the customer read down through the small print. This is important when you’re competing with other area contractors; for example, bidding for attention in the yellow pages of a phone book.

I like to think of a slogan to be very much like a headline in a magazine ad, and believe that some of the generally-agreed-upon conventions of writing a good ad headline should be applied to a company’s slogan.

The so-called “golden rule” of many good ad headlines is to provide a benefit to your customers. So try to think up a benefit or two for your customers that you can put in your slogan.

You can often think up some effective benefit ideas by trying to get in your customers head. What are some of the key concerns of your customers today? Are the rising cost of electricity a big concern for your customers. They certainly are for me. Can you wire a home or business more efficiently to help them save on electrical bills?

A second major concern is safety. I can tackle a few fix-up jobs around the house. I’ll even attempt a few minor plumbing issues. But I’ll never touch the wiring! If I were to do my own wiring, I would never feel confident that my house wasn’t going to burn down while I slept or was at work.

With these two concerns, you can create benefits of using your electrical contractor service and insert them into your slogan. Here’s a quick example that I tried to put together:

“Wiring homes and businesses safely and energy-efficiently since 1936.”

It certainly doesn’t have much “verve,” but I think it captures what you do (wiring); who your customers are (homes and businesses); the benefits of going with your company (safety and efficiency); and backs it up, building trust, with the age of the company.

This is just a start. I’m sure there are many other benefits your company offers. Pick the very best ones and use one or two of them in your slogan.

I’ll end this by saying, I think you should keep this slogan serious. If you were the owner of a gourmet candy shop, you can be more good-humoured and frivolous with your slogan. But electricity is pretty serious, potentially dangerous stuff to be dealing with. I think you may build better trust if you kept the slogan straightforward and serious.

All the best, John.
