hello abhishek:

Your undergraduate degree will not necessarily be limiting - but if you want to attend a top-flight US business school - work experience will help.

On a more regional basis - I suggest you look into Boston University - they have a great communications program that will ground you quite well in what you seek.

I hope this helps.

actually i'm still an undergrad but I have seen the adcenter and it is pretty impressive.. I recommend that you at least visit Richmond, VA to check it out for yourself.

Well you can come and visit as a tourist, but it would be expensive.

I agree with Jim Deveau that you should gain a little work experience first, and look into a communication program or a business school. Your degree in commerce shouldn't make a difference in either program. My undergrad is in biology, and i have an MBA.

When you do apply, you should definitely apply to more than one school or program. After you are accepted you could visit the schools and programs to choose from too.

Good luck.

Also check out University of Texas at Austin..they have a very highly rated Masters program in Advertising...not too expensive either.
Also, (if you have any interest) they are the only accredited university that offers a PhD in Advertising.
Worth a look...

I agree with the experts above regarding work experience. Ad agencies in India are hiring all the time and if you are good at communications it wont be tough for you to get a job there. Just drop your resume in their office and be persistent. A year or two of working with an ad-agency will not only help you gain a lot of experience(even though the pay is low) but also help you get into some of the better scholls around the globe. I would suggest you consider MICA in india itself as a possible institute to study in as it is pretty good though very hard to get into.
In USA, adcenter is the best according to me.

abishek,

I'm just curious, why aren't you considering working first? Seems like if there is a very good school already in India, you would have a great opportunity to get experience while you wait for the next CAT (a standardized test, I would guess?) to come around. Is this not an option for you?

Hi abhishek,
I am not fro India but yes, I am in India right now. It will probably be easier for you to get into Miami Ad School, but keep in mind that you should join a school with the best curriculum and dont give too much of stress on the placements of that particular school. It wont be tough for you to get a job on your own if you have a good education.
I would again suggest that you should work for an ad-agency for a year aor two. That will give you the best training you can get.

Perhaps it doesn't need to be said but I will anyhow .. there are lots of options open to you - you might even consider your UK options where you will undoubtedly have a different learning experience.

Then if you are fixed on the US - I would agree with adcenter.... Good luck!

On the same campus as Northwestern's Kellogg School is the Medill School of Journalism, which offers a Master's Program in Integrated Marketing Communications, which prepares students for advertising and marketing careers as well or better than the Kellogg School does. Why? The typical Medill graduate gets a broader exposure to marketing and advertising than the typical Kellogg graduate.

I graduated from Medill with my Masters in Advertising back in 1979 and have followed the school closely since. As when I graduated 25 years ago, recruiters from the finest ad agencies and the finest companies from across the U.S. line up to interview Medill IMC Master's candidates. The MS degree I received there is an asset to this day, a little more than 25 years after I received it.

In a tough job market way back when, I received three offers and accepted a great marketing communications job at GE two months before the program ended. I only got around to sending out a total of three resumes, as I was so busy interviewing.

The starting salaries that the Medill grads of today make are phenomenal, and compare well with the entry-level salaries graduates of the finest MBA programs (like Kellogg) typically receive.

You can work anyware in the world after you spend a great year in the Chicago suburb of Evanston.

I agree with John on Medill, especially if you are considering PR. Chicago is an excelent market for advertising and your classmates will provide you with a lifetime of industry contacts. Having done both PR and advertising for the last 18 years I've hired lots of entry-level young people.

In addition to Medill, please consider the University of Missouri at Columbia for journalism if you are serious about PR. There is also an outstanding advertising curriculumn. Additionally, you'll find they work well with students from overseas. I'm sure they can put you in touch with several graduate students from India already there, so you can get information from someone in your same situation.

Your PR or adv. degree will help you get on the list of considered candidates, but it won't get you the job. The ability to write is critical in either profession. In fact, when I hire, I look for smart people who can write regardless of their degree. I've hired English majors, history majors, business, general liberal arts, etc.

Another important part of your education will be an internship. You'll learn more after two-three months in a good internship than in years at school. Both Medill and Univ. of MO have good programs for internships.

Good luck.
