SWOT is a tool whereby you profile yourself and your competitors by identifying and examing their and your

strenghts, weaknesses, opportunities (for growth and more profitability), and the threats.........

It is a diagnostic tool to explain where you are in the market in relationship to the competition.......

Hi g.umar,

SWOT is a strategic management tool used to determine:

  • The (S)trengths and (W)eaknesses which are internal to a company

  • The (O)pportunities and (T)hreats which are external to a company

This is one of the more frequently asked questions here so for tons of info, go to the top right of this page, click on "Search Questions" and enter SWOT into the Search Term box.

The best tool for learning SWOT is an example. Since you placed this in the Email Marketing directory, I'll give you an example of a possible SWOT scenario within email marketing.

STRENGTH (Internal): The size and quality of your email list
WEAKNESS (Internal): Your inability to market effectively to this list
OPPORTUNITY (External): Possible ways to grow your list
THREAT (External): Competition and market changes

Finally, you need to match your Strengths to your Threats and Weaknesses to Opportunities. This will allow you to set goals to turn your Weaknesses into Strengths, take advantage of your Opportunities, and lessen the impact of Threats.

all of these definitions are correct. From a cynical veiwpoint, SWOTs are typically used to occupy time on a boondoggle (management trip to a fun place where they pretend to work in the morning so they can play golf in the afternoon). Most often, SWOTs are completed and considered only for a few days. Then they are put away while business continues as usual. In order for a SWOT to really work, the team needs to review the actions taken against the SWOT monthly.

In a large organization, SWOTs are most effective when developed by middle management without their respective bosses in the room. If the bosses are there, it stifles candor. People worry about painting a bleak picture or disagreeing with managment. Plus, if the bosses are in the room, then they get saddled with the responsibility for making changes happen, when the managers really need to be the ones supporting any of the fixes.

    g.umar:

Nothing more is required to explain SWOT. I'm pretty sure that you must have understood the meaning of SWOT by now. You might want to check the following link:

I found it pretty helpful, nicely summarized.

    SWOT...

Its an age old profiler. It provides clarity. Its a great way to know yourself. It helps one move from the microcosm to the macrocosm with confidence. Athma to the Paramathma!

It therefore has multiple applications both at personal and individual levels.

It should be an interesting exercise to have multiple SWOTs done on products and calculating the grand SWOT index for a portfolio. I've not done this yet and i hope somebody can give me a link or more ideas on this.

Good to write on this! Hope it helps!!
