Tips For Searching Khe QuestionsPremium Member

Hi all. We're interested in adding some hints to the top of the Search Questions page, to help people get the most out of our search engine. Here are a few ideas I thought of. But you may have more?

You can also comment on features you would like our search engine to have. I'll add those ideas to our development wish list. But first I'd like to implement suggestions for using our current SE. Thanks!

Best,

Val

Search Questions

We have a growing knowledge base of more than 2,000 marketing questions previously asked in KHE. So there's a good chance you will find what you're looking for. Here are a few pointers to help you search.

  • The search engine will find all the questions that include your search term in the question title or the body of the question. It will not give you discussions that include your search term in one of the answers. (Currently, there is no way to search the answers.)

  • Let's say you wanted to find a question about "BTL" (below the line). When you search on "BTL" you could get questions including the word "suBTLe" mixed in your search results. So scan your results, and choose a headline that looks likely. Then use your browser's FIND feature to quickly jump to "BTL" on that page.

  • KHE began operating in January 2004, so you can't search any earlier than that. The end date is fixed on today's date.

  • You can put a member's name in the Search Term box to find all questions posted by a member (or questions that mention the member in the body of the question).

  • Boolean operators don't work with this search engine. So you can't cross-reference two search terms like "marketing AND plan". But you can search for "marketing plan".

Functionality Feedback
(for future development)
* Is it difficult to work with the end date being fixed?
* Should we search answers too?
* Would it be helpful to add # Responses to the results page? (per SRyan)

Val, some functionality feedback...

Fixed end date is fine. I never change the date span when I use Search here because of the "timeless" nature of the questions. Unless I'm looking for a specific question that is rattling in my memory from a vague month.

DEFINITELY should search answers. (I thought it already did!)

- Shelley

ps. Put some points on this question and I'll bet you start getting member feedback.

Val, I love this forum, but to be perfectly honest, we have a mickey mouse search engine.

If someone wants to search the archives, I think better advice would be to suggest that folk go to the advanced search page on Google, and indicate that you only want to look at results from www.marketingprofs.com so that you have full boolean searching.

Hi Shelley. Good idea re: the points. Done!

telemoxie - that's a good suggestion. I'll add that to our hints list in the next draft. And hopefully in the not-too-distant future we can improve our search engine.

Thanks, all, for the feedback!

Best,

Val

Hi Val,

- provide the 100 most searched keywords
- copy ideas from Google and others search tips

Thinking of Google, if a searcher isn't sure about language etc., maybe they could try a Google search first, get the results, and have a better idea of which words to enter into KHE search.

Hope this helps,

- Steve

Adding the number of responses to the search results page is an absolute must (especially for open questions).

I think that given that answers sometime refer to concepts and terms not used in the questions, it would be useful to be able to search answers too. However, it is important that there is an option to select if you want to search either one or both fields.

What would be STUNNING is a fuzzy logic search matcher that associates words with common meanings (searching on below the line would give a suggestion that you also search on direct) - and a built in spell check (like Google has).

I won't write a whole new answer here since I totally agree with SRyan, but I will write these lines so you Val know there are others that agree.

I may be too new to this forum but why does Search Questions seem to be restricted to logged in users? A visitor should also be able to search the questions in the same manner, just don't write their own Q's and A's before registering. If this is possible in some way, please do not pay attention to this remark. Everyone can see the raw list of questions so...

Sauk, thanks for pointing out that Search Questions isn't available to visitors. When I launch KHE, I'm always logged in (give the cookies credit) so I never noticed that it's a missing link. No pun intended.

Opening up the Search to non-members might be a powerful way to attract NEW members. Plus it might discourage repetitive questions.

Obviously you are NOT too new to this forum, Sauk!

Val, I should have added a PPS to my first PS... Please don't award any Answer points to me when you close this question. My suggestion to put a "value" on this question was just to encourage the same level of input that you seemed to get on the Rules of Play posting.

Points for dumb jokes, however... that's a different matter entirely!

Thanks, all, for your help! We'll be publishing the hints today. We will review all the suggestions here when we're ready to revamp the search functionality.

Best,

Val

P.S. Shelley, I ignored your request for no points. The points were a good idea. Your input was helpful ... and I wanted to recognize EVERYONE who participated. :)
