Security - your customer is putting their money in your hands, and they will want to be sure that their money is safe.

Wensifan

Confidentiality of customer information

Secure transaction encryption, firewalls, password etc structures

Some common issues include:

The information provided to customers online about how orders are executed, how margin works, and the possibility of systems' delays;

* Procedures for ensuring that customers receive best execution;
* Procedures for ensuring adequate operational capability to handle customer trading volume;
* Security measures to protect customer privacy and funds; and
* Procedures to supervise employees' use of Internet communications.

A report from SEC of compliance you can link to here:

http://www.ici.org/issues/mrkt/arc-sec/01_sec_online_rpt.html

Hope this helps you.

If a banking/asset management firm as well, one unified financial presentation of all assets and liabilities

Financial Tools - risk engines, historical price data, correlation of stock performance to index etc.

Add these to the list:

Ease of use. Completing a transaction online should produce little or no mouse-strangling aggravation.

Economy. Customers should be saving money by using an online trading system.

Speed = straight-through-processing.

Users want to know they'll get the price they saw on their screens, not some worse price caused by a process delay.

Plus, security of funds transfer, password and process integrity, etc.

Visit some of the existing online services and see what they use in their selling to understand what they perceive as important to customers e.g. www.commsec.com.au

Good luck

Yet another important consideration is the range and depth of information that is available.

Account information
Company information
Legal information
Trading history
Etc.

Also the range of services available:

Are margin accounts available?
Can one open an option account?
How about 2 separate accounts for commodities trading and stock trading with the appearance of one account from the perspective of the customer?
Can I bank from my account?
Etc.

All these add value, (and perhaps cost too, although some may reduce cost)
