Anyone Watching The Apprenctice?
Posted By: netmar* on 10/4/2004 10:28 AM (CST) 25 Points
Just for the heck of it, is anyone watching The Apprentice? How do you like it? Comments?

Personally, I like it a lot but since I have a web background, I'm often wondering why they neglect that aspect. I know they have tight timelines but like last week, they had to create a buzz for toothpaste. Why not bombing the local web scene and hire 5 clowns instead of 10?

I have been keeping an eye on the Apprentice as well, and find it entertaining that everyone thinks that they're a marketer. I also find it interesting that when push comes to shove (especially as they come down to deadlines), they pull resources off of marketing activities (creating a buzz for the restaurant, getting information out about their products, etc.) and put them onto "more important tactical tasks."

And yet, they continue to fail... behold, Marketing is very important for success!

Firstly I am 'hooked' on it - one of the three TV shows I watch each week! Here in Canada they replay the episode at the weekend but with cut outs and they make for even better watching than the normal episode - if you can call reality TV normal!

The world of television is becoming an increasinlgy sad place with the plethora of reality programs - there are literally dozens out there and even more to come - even Martha is in talks with Mark Burnett (Survivor & The Apprentice) to have a reality show when she is released!

The more interesting aspect underlying 'marketing' going on, the product promotion during the show. With the advent of TIVO and less people watching ads the manufacturers are not just going for 'subtle' product placement they are making it an integral part of the 'reality' show.

So far in this season on the Apprentice we have seen the teams design a new toy for Mattel and they met at a Toys R Us and launched a new flavour toothpaste for Crest, as well as the numerous plugs for Trumps company's- what next?

How soon before a real version of Rollerball??!!

Paul -- don't forget the less-than-subtle product placements within the show as well... they've shown the "applicants" getting off of the same airline (Delta Airlines) at the airport in at least two episodes (possibly in some of the opening credits too...).

Product placement is fascinating stuff, if you ask me!

Jill, I suspect that product placement is at least half of the PURPOSE of these reality shows! Some aren't as subtle (Queer Eye, What Not To Wear), but the products are all over the place.

Good point Paul. Although, it's not a very surprising practice to me. Look at some movies staring Mel Gibson and see what he's drinking. And what about the movie in which he drinks Pepto Bismol right out of the bottle on the "morning after"! hehe On TV, think about The Price is Right...

Reality shows are just taking advantage of the situation since the concept is appropriate for such practice. Even here in Canada, Canadian Idol is sponsored by Revlon, Le Repêchage Bell by Kraft and Bell, etc.

As far as the show goes, I may not agree with some of their behaviours and decisions but these people are under great pressure and have to deal with other's strong personnalities so how could I pretend I could do better? The part I find the most entertaining is in the board room...

Of all the stupid reality shows (bachelor, millionaire, paradise island etc) I feel this is the nicest one. Not because it is in a business setting, but because it shows you so many examples of bad group sociology, psycology etc. Fun to watch if there is nothing more useful to do (and the only reality show I actually can sit through for more that 30 minutes).

My wife and I both watch the apprentice any time we can.

I guess we love to conflicts and how people struggle to accomplish a goal while bickering with each other.

Its amazing to me how some people can out-and-out lie knowig they were being tape (e.g. the lady that said she was called the "N" word in an earlier episode).

I'm amazed at Trump's hair. How can someone supposedly so rich and powerful go on-camera looking such a klutz? Is that a really bad rug, a comb-over, or what?

Sean Connery showed the world a balding guy can still look the goods twenty years ago or more, I guess Trump doesn't remember that or wasn't paying attention.

End of hair rant.

Some of the marketing and sales ideas are pathetic, and then they execute mediocrity at a very low level...

Why don't any of the teams use the collective resources here to get an edge?

We would need to be waiting for their questions as they would have to get a 30-60 min turnaround. Why doesn't Marketing Profs approach the producers and offer a special KHE section for the teams which only they can access... The idea would be to show ingenuity at play. We would have to offer the service free. They would have to accept MarketingProfs would not pay a product placement fee. We would be supplying a valuable service to them... right?

Just an idea. I guess the hair rant will probably put paid to it anyway.

Happy watching

I have been watching the reruns through Starworld and cant get over the the episode where Sam got axed!

I really do find him extremely pushy and I dunno if Id ever understand his personality and activities.

Further, I am proud that Nick (Warnock) persisted till the latter episodes. Nick is a fellow XEROX team member thou Im based in Manila (Philippines) and he is from L.A. Says much about the standards of a 'copier salesman' nowadays.

I'll be teaching again this last sem of the year and may apply similar case studies to my 'marketing management' class.

All in all, The Apprentice is both entertaining and worth the one hour a week.

Shelley, what did you think?
I'm sold on it.

The most remarkable person to me was Amarosa.
What was that all about?
Did you see her in the last episode, standing all alone, seeking someone to talk to her. UNREALity.
