LOOK OUT FOR EMAILS WITH ATTACHMENTS THAT APPEAR TO COME FROM OTHER MARKETINGPROFS MEMBERS!

I've gotten several, and someone just sent me a message saying they got one that appeared to come from ME. I did a virus scan last night and SURE ENOUGH, newly infected files were there.

Hiya Shelley. Were all the virus emails from people you have exchanged emails with in the past? I get these emails sometimes too, but they seem to be from people I have interacted with in the past, rather than random members.

The ones I see most often have the subject lines "Thank you!" or "Pricing". So anyone who sees those in their inbox should delete them. And definitely delete any email with an attachment you weren't expecting to receive.

I'll ask Allen if there's anything we can do about this. I don't know much about how these things work. My sense is that the longer you have an email address and the more people you communicate with through it, the more virus messages you'll receive over time. My best advice to everyone is to update your virus software constantly and scan frequently. Maybe Allen - or other members - have other ideas?

Best,

Val

P.S. In case it helps, keep in mind that it's your choice whether or not to display your email address on your profile page. You may want to switch that off to reduce your risk. The setting is on your "My Profile" page. (You must be logged in to see your link to that page in the right nav box.)

I'll ask Aaron if it would be difficult to change those links to a safer (?) format ... maybe "email me" as a member (mjklanac, I think it was) recently wrote me to suggest. If it would help with this, that would be a good reason to move it up on "the list" of dev projects.

P.P.S. Here's a free online virus scanner I've used before when I felt like I wanted a second opinion to Norton. You might want to try it: HouseCall.

You can also try www.avast.com
It is an excellent virus program - free for home use.

Michele, I'm using Avast now, too. I used to be a Norton customer, but my laptop crashed several times a day when it was installed.

Val, my past experience with an email-toxic virus is as you describe -- it raids the MS Outlook "Contact" folders.

THIS time, however, it was DEFINITELY coming from faked-out email identities of MarketingProfs members that I've never communicated with offline (with one exception). I recognized their identities as recent posters on KHE, though.

i use AVG version 7.0 (beta) form http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ the Current version is 6 but 7 is REALLY GOOD. This comes with a scaner that plugs in to any email program.

also online scanner i find is from www.pandasoft.com they update hourly and have a little advertising when you finish the scan but it is small.

shelly was it to your gmail account? or another account?

Hi everyone

I found a great anti-virus product about ten months that seems to catch pretty much anything that is out in cyber space that isn't legit! I know plenty of suggestions of software have been made above, but this one is definitely worth looking at.

You can download a free 30 day trial at www.firetrust.com

Carl, I did not receive any infested email TO my gmail account, but another KHE member received an aliased email FROM my gmail address.

(Golly, if martians were reading this, they'd have a heck of a time understanding what I just said!)

Hey guys,

thanks for all the info. You guys are the greatest. I can't think of a better group of people in all the world. Hey Shelley, it's time for you to get your beauty rest...I heard Hillary might be running for president in 2008 and I want you to be ready. We've got about 3.5 years to get ready for Hillary and you remember that "Virius Alert" outfit she had on in that cartoon website you saw her dancin' in. We might be able to use that to snuff out her whole campaign. All this talk about viruses is makin' me tired. Good night Shelley...good night John boy.

Your Personal Servant, Deremiah, *CPE,
