Need Compensation Plan Template
Posted By: martin* on 10/8/2004 4:47 PM (CST) 125 Points
I have just been hired to do new product development, business development and marketing. My compensation is to be a combination of base salary + incentive. I need some examples of compensation plans that address these combined types of responsibilities.

The three duties you list (product development, business development, and marketing) pretty much come down to profitability or sales growth as the only way you could incent. Basically, use a plan where you get a portion of sales or profits of a new product line.

Otherwise, you could look at separate incentives for each different function. A bonus for taking a new product through different stages of development, for each deal you arrange on the business development side, etc.

Don’t forget ownership incentives –in a startup for instance – it often takes a long time to generate profits. If not a startup – the “profit” is usually minimized to reduce tax – so make sure your metrics justly reward your contribution to the bottom line INCLUDING equity of the company. Stock options with a progressive percentage of vesting are the usual way to balance the needs of the company with the needs of employee.

These are great strategies. What I am looking for is a template (WORD, WordPerfect, etc.) that I can tailor.

Hi,
There is a website called hrVillage.com. They have a section of their website called hrToolkit that has hundreds of surveys, forms, and templates in Word and Acrobat for download. And best of all: It's FREE.
