Another Question About Marketing Certifications.
Posted By: paulie.walnuts* on 10/14/2004 10:57 AM (CST) 250 Points
I am dead set on obtaining a marketing certification (via. online) to further market myself as well as gain a better understanding of the industry. What I am NOT looking for is career advice, or a "certifications don't matter" type response.

Who offers marketing certs and classes that does not require an associates or bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite? Would you recommend one in particular? Do you have a cert?

I am a bit cash-strapped, so expense is an issue, and I am a bit impatient and don’t want to take two years to complete it (or I would just go get an associate degree). However, I am perfectly willing to work/study very hard to get it.

My current list of marketing certifications consists of:
UC- Berkeley (http://explore.berkeley.edu/UCExt/subdiscipline.asp?value=1.6.&action=Inter...)
UC – Santa Barbara
(http://www.extension.ucsb.edu/cert/bml/mar/)

Can you help me add to my list and expand my options? Thanks!

This is a link to one of the Chartered Institute of Marketing's online courses:

http://www.cim.co.uk/cim/dev/html/couQuaQuaDetails.cfm?ObjectID=3DE094DC-D9...

If this doesn't work you can navigate from the home page of the CIM website - www.cim.co.uk. They also do other online courses but I don't know what level you're at, so I've just given you that one link. The CIM is UK based, but has global coverage - it is certainly the most respected and oldest professional marketing organisation as far as I'm aware. Here in the UK job ads frequently ask for marketing degree, and/or CIM marketing qualifications (normally at advanced certificate or post-grad diploma level). You don't need any prior qualifications to do the certificate in marketing, although the higher levels normally ask for the certificate/advanced cert as qualifications I think, or relevant experience/other studies.

Good luck - I hope you find the course that suits you.

It's not hard to use Google to find lists of on-line courses. e.g.
http://www.worldwidelearn.com/marketing-courses.htm

And the recommendations above sound good.

It seems to me that you have three issues:

1) cost and time
2) quality of education
3) value of certificate

If it were me, I'd start with the last issue first. For example, if my end goal was a job with an advertising agency, I would call a number of personnel managers at advertising agencies, and see what types of certificates they value. I would then choose between those on the "short list" based on the other factors.
