Pr For Dirt Motorsports Racing
Posted By: barnstorm* on 10/27/2004 12:02 AM (CST) 250 Points
I am doing the PR for Dirt Motorsports Racing. They have about 2M fans now but want to extend their base by getting more mainstream media attention.

I need advice on how (what types of things would be newsworthy) and where I should send PR. Also, how often.

I'd also like to consider celebrity endorsement. Any ideas how to possibly get that?

You initially asked about sending press releases, but it is hard t imagine how you can do much just by doing this. I think to grow the sport, you will need to do a bit more.

It seems a lot of niche sports have broken out through one of their athletes doing something amazing. They then benefit, but this also carries the sport also. Lance Armstrong, Tony Hawk, and even Tiger Woods all come to mind (golf was already big, but Tiger definitely broadened the appeal).

What does that mean for MX? Some ideas:
- If you have any influence in things like licensing, see if they can do more with areas that could expand the interest. Things like licensing out to video game makers. Make it easier for the athletes to be able to do it (sometimes the sports authority puts limitations on this type of stuff).
- Work with areas that add to your publicity, such as the extreme video folks, the made for TV events like X-games, getting MX teams on TV shows, etc.

Brain storm i can help you. We are sports agents for football basketball and baseball players and deal with many teams.
I on a daily basis try to get exposure for my athletes, as well as see the way proffesional teams get exposure for their club. There are many ways to do this. I can also help you secure celebrity endorsements. Drop me an email so we can discuss this further.

For newsworthy- Choose a dirt motorcycler to publicize. Is he the best? Does he do extreme tactics others do not? Is he outgoing and sociable w/fans? Highlight a key player. Fing an angle, find something unique. The media will follow. (but in case they don't - you can publicize at other raceing events or auto racing (posters, maybe the announcer can make an annoucement...). Find where your target audience is. You can send press releases (with a picture) to local newspapers first- even if they do not bite- you may get a blog. (A media kit sent to the stations would also be great- especially if you send them free tickets, fact sheet, bios, company history. Also, go online and check out if there are any dirtbike magazines nationallly. A one time celebrity endorsement - do that at the end of your strategy. You want people who like the sport, not the celebrity. Celebrity- should just be the incentive.

Thanks so much. General concensus seems to be to focus on the individual athletes to focus on and look for interesting angles on him/them.

If you think of anything else, feel free to contact me with more...

Have you thought about acquiring a big name sponsor for the sport? MX bike company, gear company, etc? The big name would help attract more main stream press and knowledge. I do mobile marketing (i.e., tours) and would be happy to chat about your request for ideas further, as I have a real consumer based view of marketing and pr in general. Please feel free to contact me directly
