How To Track The Opening With Service Pack 2 In Xp
Posted By: molmi* on 2/9/2005 7:31 AM (CST) 250 Points
As you know, with XP operation system, Outlook display images only when users clic on "display images" button.
Now for e-marketers is a new problem: may be users has opened the e-mail, but if they don't push display images, the image that track the opens can't count. Has anyone have a solution for this?
Thanks

If images are not on, then you can't track the open of the email message. There's really no workaround for this.

However, Outlooks XP is nice enough to tell its users that the images have been disabled in each message where images have been blocked. Also, it's made very plain that all the user has to do to see images is a quick click of the mouse.

One "best practice" that we have implement with all of our clients is placing copy such as "Unable to see images? Use this link for a full-color version of this message." (And for the text versions, we put something similar: "Prefer to see images? Click here for a full-color version of this message: LINK")

The full-color version that we link to is dynamically generated and fully trackable to the user level, so when it is opened it counts as an HTML open. Also, all click tracking is down to the user level, too.

Even if you can't do a dynamic Web version, you should still consider a static Web version and link to that.

Hope this helps somewhat.

You also should think about reminding people to add you to their Safe Senders list. Your images will then appear as soon as the email is either previewed or opened.

been like safe senders is not the problem. I want to count opening in emails, and I'm looking for how. Displaying images that count is the actually I use, but with XP there is a problem.
Putting a link above is may be the more drastic solutions. may be somebody has one for count, without images, and not linking to a stating page.

You should remember that even if the images are not displayed, the space of the images remains embedded in the text. Therefore, the solution that I-m dreaming (but not tested) is either:

- Create the condition in the text to click to download the image below/above/righ or left with sentence such as "...as could see on the image below"
- Slice and spread the image in the text in a such way that the text can be read with the presence of the image. But if you opt for this solution the level of trust between your potential readers and your company must be very high and... if it's the case they will probably open your email in anyway.

But at the end, I allways open Permission email and that may be the most efficient way to avoid SPAM.

Everyone, thanks for participating. I am closing this question since it's gathered a considerable amount of dust.
