First of all, you must drive traffic to your site. Whether it's B2C or B2B, traffic is most important. You can work with other companies to create marketing campaigns where people must visit your site to register, or you can hold events where people come to your site to RSVP.

Depending on the nature of your site, target the appropriate media or medium to distribute your press-kits. It's important to have an excellent press-kit so the chance of coverage is higher.

Depending on where you are and what industry/category you're in, you probably ought to hire a professional PR agency, if you're really serious about this. They know where and how to get the ink that will be most effective for you. It will take you years to develop the contacts and know-how they have.

Why are you limiting your plan to PR? How do you know that's the most effective and efficient way to go?

Public relations can be a very effective way to drive traffic to your web site. (First the obvious: include your web address on everything from b-cards to e-mails).

The most effective way to do this is through search engine optimized press releases. First, go to the Overture Keyword Selector Tool (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion) and figure out which keywords people use to search for your products and/or services. Second, pick a promotion to drive people to your website and craft a release using those keywords you identified in the headline and throughout the copy. Also, be sure to include links to your site at least in the first and last sentence. Third, distribute your press release through a service like PR Web (www.prweb.com) or PR Leap (www.prleap.com).

Repeat the process as often as desired. Tweak your keywords and monitor the traffic to your site to see which ones are most effective. In most cases, traffic to your site will increase. The best thing about this strategy is the total cost is only the time it takes you to do it. All the services are free...including this advice.

kolla,
You've gotten a lot of good advise so far. I would just add a couple of points:

First of all, establish yourself or primaries in the business as subject experts. PR is useful for this. Make sure that when people search either these experts or the subject that they are expert in, your website is one of the first that comes up. This comes from a careful blending of public relations and search engine optimization.

Secondly, make sure that you have your website on EVERYTHING. It should be in every press release you send out and in every ad you publish. It should also be on your stationary and business cards, signage and billboards, on company trucks if you use them. Related to that, make sure your website name is an easy one for people to remember. If it isn't, try to find one that is.

Third, while you can and should use PR to drive traffic to your website, don't forget both PR and your website are means to the same end, increased sales. Some good PR opportunities may not maximize website traffic but will help you in your overall B2C and B2B efforts. Don't forgo those in order to increase website traffic (unless of course you only sell online!)

I hope this helps!

Bill
