Tapabrata,
Welcome to MarketingProfs!

A Recent Question was posted a few days back on Rural Marketing -
http://www.marketingprofs.com/ea/qst_question.asp?qstID=8228
This could help you to start with.

Apart from this, few more points:

Though personally I am not sure if the current conditions favor this opinion, but then, I believe thats the very purpose of your thesis.

First of all, DONT restrict yourself to the Indian Mindset, if only this is your topic. There would be a lot of cases that you would find in Africa, that have proved this statement wrong (Cyprus, Nigeria..) - the Economic divide has been widened over the years. You can take them up as particular cases, as to how and WHY they failed to bridge the gap.

You can take this further to talk about India in particular (Rest of the discussion is specific to India)

(i) Identify the reasons behind the Divide, the history behind it, the demographics behind it and the trends behind this divide (This is more to do with Economics and is well covered by Gurcharan Das in "Indian Economy")

(ii) Next step comes the Marketing. For years, with the advent of Liberalization and FDIs/FIIs, Marketing has been focussed on select groups only. This trend has been there for almost 8-10 years. Why is it, that now, there has been a sudden change in the perception? What is it that lures the Marketers, not only National, but International too vis-a-vis the Rural Sector? What opportunities lie in this low-income, low-opportunity low-capital sector for the International Fraternity?

At this stage, you can talk of E-choupal, and HLL Initiatives over the time - to talk about Rural Marketing.

Finally, how is this going to be bridged. You can cover the following points -
- Investments in the Rural Sector
- Infrastructural Development
- Govt Subsidies
- Education Policies and Spread of Education
- Public Awareness
- Increasing Opportunities
- Sectors venturing into the Rural Community - Retail - Food, Apparel and Groceries
- Income Levels
- Gradual Removal of Subsidies, bringing both the communities to a common platform.

You can also refer to the Economic Survey conducted this year before the budget. It would provide a good insight into the Current Economic Status!

Hope this bit helps you in getting pointers to start with!
Regards,
Puru
