Pay-per Call Campaign? Anyone Use It?
Posted By: briannotspam* on 7/23/2005 5:12 PM (CST) 125 Points
Hello. I have just been reading about pay-per call online advertising. basically it seems there are companies out there that will advertise your business online, and list a phone number. They somehow can track the calls that come in to your business that are generated from the ads, and you are charged around 2-10 dollars per call. This sounds ideal for my company, as clicks are a far cry from a sale for what we sell, and an actually voice on the phone will get us much more sales. Has anyone had success with this? Anyone know a good company to use? Anyone know how they track which calls are generated from the ads? Anyone know if this works?
Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
The way I see it, "Pay-per-call" could have two variants - The Number is localized based on the caller, and has different Salesmen, dedicated to each and every location
or there is a toll-free number, wherein the same set of confident Executives handle your queries, and in turn, coordinate with the localized salesmen to close the deals.

In the first case, there is less of "tele-marketing" involved and what is critical is "convincing the customer" for a one-to-one meet. In the second case, an overview of the product, its benefits, the convenience of shopping, and acceptibility of further contacts is what is discussed. This requires more of telemarketing skills, and is sometimes more difficult, since it precedes a one-to-one discussion with the salesman.

Having said that, personally, I havent worked with any companies that offer PP Calling Campaigns, since primarily I have been associated with IT Services.
But, based on my limited experience, I have studied a few cases pertinent to your discussion.

A common Example would be Dell, though, there is a limited set of places, where the numbers are advertised.

I have also witnessed the first type of Pay per call variant - wherein local numbers were provided by a low-cost airline in different advertisements. Once the calls were received - it was forwarded to the appropriate departments - Customer Service, Inquiry, Delivery of Tickets, New Offerings, etc.

You also have a lot of Companies riding on the "Toll-free" Campaigning. My assumption is, it is the same technique they would apply as we discussed!

Hope this helps!
All the best.
Regards,
Puru

Hi Briannotspam,

I believe Puru is talking about something completely different than what you are interested in.

What you are talking about is based on pay-per-click search engine advertising except instead of clicking on an ad, the ad features a unique 8XX number that prospects call for more info.

I have looked extensively into pay-per-call marketing and my best advice is to go to Google and type in "pay per call" and you will find all the best information you need.

Too much information to cover in the time and space alloted here.

ClickZ has recently featured many articles on it www.clickz.com.

Also at www.searchenginewatch.com

Both great resources - relevant, current and accurate.

Ingenio is a leader www.ingenio.com as is Miva www.miva.com

I hope that helps.

Hi,

I've worked with this and from my experience, it works great as long as you have got an interesting promess (people calling would receive a gift, a discount or whatever that they feel is valuable), otherwise, why would they call?
I've worked with my phone company, all incoming calls were treated by a machine and callers were asked a few questions to which they could answer by choosing a number (for you, would be : if you saw our advertising on site YZ, press 1, if you saw it on magazine WX, press 2 etc...). Provides great information but it shouldn't take more than 20 to 30 seconds or people will be upset. Then they have been asked to leave their phone number with guarantee that we would call back within X hours/ days. the phone company can deliver a database on a daily/weekly/monthly basis...

I hope this makes sense.

Marie
