New Business Network For Online Professionals
Posted By: kligman* on 7/25/2005 11:23 AM (CST) 250 Points
I am launching a new business network for online professionals. It will be similar to linkedin but this one will focus on online professionals.

Professionals include domain name resellers, web designers, online marketers, programmers etc...

Basically anyone that works to create things online.

So I decided that I want to go with a brandable domain name that is short and easy to remember. Please my fellow professionals help me choose the right name from this list below. I also am drawing a blank for a great tagline, so that is needed as well.

So far for a tagline I have "The Business Network for Online Professionals". Please help me with something better.

The domain names I own that I can choose from are:
2bn.net
bafoo.com
comave.com
comdux.com
ecomnation.com
roonz.com
gather.ws (i don't like .ws names but these 5 are good)
globes.ws
joint.ws
peer.ws
punch.ws
ideago.com (i like this, but wanted to use it for my consulting company)
joofy.com
jvint.com (joint venture)
kee.be
Tyming.com
ugru.com
vDotcom.com

If you have a better name that is available to register I would like to hear that to. Thank you so much for your help with this.

What about a .biz extension.

onlineprof.biz or .org
onlinenet.biz
onlinexpert.net, org or .biz
seekguru.net, org or .biz
onlineman.net, org or biz

I checked out the domains and they aren't registered.

Hope this helps.

I think I'm going to stick with a dot com (.com) name extension. Also I'm looking for something smaller and more brandable. Any comments on the names above? I also am still in need of a tagline. Please help as I need to make a descision asap.

Find a name you can use intials with, such as ONLINE PROFESSIONALS NETWORK -OPN.COM.

Why would people be interested in th network? In 5 words or less... Whatever it is, that's your tag.

Good luck,
From the beautiful Cooley Peninsula, Ireland

What is it you're trying to communicate with the name? What's the positioning for the business? Why should someone join/buy? Where is the money coming from? Do members pay, or are you selling advertising?

I feel none of the names represent your business, they can be mistaken for some other biz.

Here is my tag line:

In- line with Online

Online biz with a buzz

The Business Network for Online Professionals...

it already exists...it's called blogs & google

most web professionals have a blog...which they link to other blogs...

when they're looking to network with someone with a skillset they need, find a job, etc... they hit up google and find blogs...

or monster for jobs (monster even has a networking feature...that relatively few people use)...

compare the facebook.com (google pr 7) with linkedin.com (google pr ZERO!) traffic graph on Alexa for a graphical illustration of good idea vs. not.

a few ny times & washington post clippings does not a sound long term business model make...remember 1999...

linkedin offers an elite professional network across many industries...i.e. a high ranking tech ceo, could meet up with a burger chain's ceo and end up getting their it contract through mutual friends' endorsements... the burger magnate might know very little about tech and probably doesn't have a blog and is probably not a "power user" of google... so linked in provided a valuable service for graying execs to meet the tech savvy wunderkinds... of course it will go away when all of the boomer execs have retired...not to far off.

the problem with such a networking tool for "online professionals only" is...they don't need it...

with stuff like blogger, typepad.com & Squarespace.com what online pro is going to want an unranked cookie cutter networking site to network with other techies...

sorry to rain on your parade...but it's better than wasting time & $$$ to develop something that probably wouldn't work...

here's what one of the online pros you would be targeting has to say about linkedin.com

"I'm bugged by forms that invite or require me to specify the unspecifiable. Particularly when Google already knows the subtle truth of the matter."

http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/2003/12/16.html

sorry to rain on your parade...but I'm being honest & sincere here...hope it helps...

I appreciate your comments, but I do belive there is space out there for niche marketing.

I have one business network site called JIBN.com the Jewish International Business Network and it is doing very well.

Also if what you are saying is true then there would be no need for DNForum and other nice message boards as well as all the freelance websites out there. I do believe there is a market out there and I will itch my nitch.

Also if what you were saying would be true then there would be no need for marketingprofs.com this very website as all of us could just sign up for linkedin and marketingprofs would have to close down.

jibn.com targers jewish folks who may or may not be technologically inclined...

online pros. are by definition tech inclined...see the difference?

by the way...

what exactly is an "online professional"?

seems broad...

What would you say is a more specific term for those that work online? Internet professionals? Ecommerce Professionals? I also feel that online professionals is broad.

When launching a website you need:

A domain name
Hosting
Web Design
Logo Design
Programming
Marketing

This site is too bring everyone involved together. From a person that sells domain names to the one who buys full websites.

what is roonz.com? and if i tell a friend about your site...how am i going to do that and have them remember without spelling it and writing it down...since roonz is not a word like monster or even comprised of words like ebay, elance, etc... and the double o colud be mis-interpreted for ou

Last name suggestion:

www.neton.com

I don't like roonz either, the name should give me a hint about what that site does. I use linked in too, and I'm interested in networking.

Good luck!

Since I'm going to try and build a brand I needed to go with a brandable name. When you hear Yahoo or Google or Ebay you don't know what it is just by the name itself. Even RYZE.com which is a close second to linkedin in business networking online does not have any meaning.

I know that you will say that those big brands put millions of dollars behind them, and that is true, but not from day 1.

I didn't see anything above that was better and of the names I put up as a choice to go with only one person said I should go with ideago.com and no one else gave any suggestions of the other names. I love ideago, but I want to use that for my business consulting firm.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

In case you're still interested in looking for other domains that might be available, try http://www.whois.sc

They have a "name spinner" that suggests domain names that I've found quite useful.
