Can anyone direct me to a study showing effectiveness of gimmick ads, (such as the Pepisco Aquafina bubblewrap ad).

I think it will be more effective if you gave the links to the ad that you are talking about. or tell us where you r from. Cause this is a global forum and the ads are not usually same for a product all over. you may also want to check sites like adrants.com Hope that helps.
