Branding Longevity

Are all brand names destined to die? Can a brand name last forever? If so, why? If not, why not?

Nothing lasts forever, all it takes is one mistake and the brand is destroyed.

Brands need to keep changing to meet there needs of the customer, if they dont change they will become stail and die.

Thinking back on brand names that have had longevity, I tried to identify some that were around at the turn of the century. There were just a few: Wells Fargo, Levi Strauss, Clabbergirl (baking powder), Colt and Smith & Wesson. They're still around today.

Also Dow. And if you open up to the last 50 years, there are a boatload -- even some that have weathered bad news. Looking to very recent business disasters, Bridgestone-Firestone kept their brand even after years of near-disastrous press. Like most things in marketing, it requires great skill and a little bit of luck ... not necessarily in that order.
