Being Good To Yourself In 2008

Posted by Anonymous on 1500 Points
Hi Everyone -

Last year at this time I asked about making resolutions for 2007. Randall commented that the first step was to be good to ourselves.

Of course, being somewhat slow on the uptake, it took me nearly 10 months to internalize what he said and see that he was spot-on, as usual.

So, this year, my question is: What will you do in 2008 to be good to yourself?

Most of us get so caught up in our myriad of responsibilities, that taking care of ourselves takes a very low priority. Ultimately, this lessons our abilities to handle the very responsibilities that we think keep us too busy to take time to small the flowers.

Since it's my question, I'll start. I love to bike ride. It helps me clear my head and makes me feel good. Yet, when things get stressed, I stop. I just started again 2 months ago (after over a year hiatus) and am going to continue this into the new year. I'm striving for 7 days a week, knowing that will give me one day to bag it for other priorities.

I feel calmer and more able to handle the very stressors that were why I was too busy to give myself this hour.

What will you do to be good to yourself in 2008?

Carrie

I've always thought if I'm too busy to work out- then I'm too busy. But as a type a, it just gives me one more thing to obsess about.

In 07 I met a guy who balances me out, just a bit-- and I am learning to relax over down time and that its ok, to just do nothing.

    Carrie,

Both my father and my aunt (75/87 respectively) have alzheimers. There is good research that indicates mental stimulation keeps alzheimers at bay. So, this year I'm going to learn another language. We'll see how this old dog does.

Great question ,this allows you to get past the surface and truly have a plan. For me I am very organized and disciplined in my business but when it comes to me I tend to take as take can.

It is ironic to read this post, as just before I emailed a couple friends to have our second annual (well 2 out of 4 yrs) weight off. We have found this keeps us honest with ourselves to eat better and work out. It is also a lot of fun as we are extremely competitive, the weekly updates tend to motivate all of us.

For 2008 I will eat healthier and work out regularly.
I also will provide equal time for me and my family and not always put business first. What I have found is this makes me mentally stronger and focused, end result better business.

I bought myself a treadmill, and took out a subscription to Audible dot com. This year I plan to spend 20 minutes every other day walking, and listening to a new book from Audible on my Ipod. Two birds, one stone: exercise more and read more..thats my treat to myself.

Work smarter, not harder. Focus my attention on projects, clients, and opportunities that have better ROI for my time. Spend more time out in nature.

    Hi Carrie and Marketinprofs Experts,

    HAPPY NEW YEAR...

First I'd like to say Carrie I'm so proud of you. It takes a lot of courage to step out and make changes. Often we know what the problem is and we generally recommend the same solutions to others but struggle when it comes to taking our own medicine.

I'm so glad to hear you're at least trying to put one foot in front of the other. The more you practice it daily the easier it will become to make your new decision a habit but again Carrie I'm so Proud of you and all the others too for being honest and trying something new.

    HERE'S WHAT I'M GONNA DO FIRST---EXPERIMENT...

Although I'm a very good eater two years ago I shared with our experts at this same time of year that I changed my diet getting rid of Shell fish, pork and foods that the Jewish Torah suggested were unclean and not kosher. A lot of my Christian friends challenged me but I decided still to take this journey alone for myself. I'm so glad I did as I'm feeling so much better and my energy level has increased tremendously. See if I would have done what my friends told me I still never would know for myself the importance of at least experimenting with my diet to see if I could improve upon it. So I'm going to spend more time experimenting before I let others influence my decisions because of their values.

THE SECOND THING I'M GOING TO DO IS---LISTEN TO MY HEART

You see often times we go with what others tell us without applying the rule of observation for ourselves. A lot of mistakes I've made in life I've taken the responsibility for but nothing hurt me worse than when I made decisions to do what others recommended against my own heart. I'm talking about that inner voice some call intuition others may call consciousness or gut feeling. So the next thing I'm going to do for myself in the year 2008 is listen more deeply and intently to my heart. And If my heart tells me to do something that others can't rationally understand that's okay because this year I'm going to experiment to see what the end result is first before I rule out what my heart is saying.

THE THIRD THING I'M GOING TO DO IS---BE REVOLUTIONARY.

Now that it is 2008 I've decided to be good to myself by continuing to make REVOLUTIONARY changes in my life instead of making weak watered down Resolutions that have no power to affect my destiny. One of my suggestions to my audience of online readers was not to make Resolutions in 2008 but to make Revolutions. If you'd like to understand it better please take a minute to get a deeper appreciation for what I mean by reading the article as I would only do my explanation here a great injustice. Revolutionary Resolutions for the New Year https://newsblaze.com/story/20071231165548tsop.nb/newsblaze/TOPSTORY/story....

REMEMBER... our only real problem in life is our failure to be "MORE Creative" than we’ve ever been. If you “Invent” your opportunity YOU WILL most definitely create your future. Is there anything else I can do for you Carrie?

    Your Servant,

Lovingly Deremiah *CPE (Creating Powerful Exuberance)

    Happy New Year everyone!

I started being good to myself by finally joining the site. I officially launched my business today (the 1st) and have already gotten a few inquiries...I am looking forward to 2008 and my new venture.

I pray that you all have a blessed year. Keep God first. Don't tell your family and friends you love them...SHOW them every chance you get.

I have already started being kind and kinder to myself. I started a month ago. I made me a little patio since the husband has the real one filled with 'stuff'.

I am going to start walking again. I am going to buy a rebounder [mini trampoline] and exercise that way as well. I will probably sell them on my site.

I am going to take care of stressors in my life. A large part of that means separating from my husband of almost 10 years. It's generally amicable.

I have started to watch what I eat, and will try very hard to eat live foods, as opposed to no energy value foods. Having dental problems [serious tmj for one] has made this difficult, however I will persevere until I find a way to accomplish this. Probably by juicing.

I am going to stop manufacturing so many products myself. I am going to find contract manufacturer[s].

I am going to trademark my product names, lessening another stress. I will do that the second week of Jan, if not the first.

I am going to take the time to read the biz mags that come in. For the weekly Biz Journal, I will read that each week. If I don't, I will throw it away. I will NOT get all over myself because I didn't read it.

I will try very hard to be as organized working for myself as I was working for 'the man'. This is a stress releaser also when things are uncluttered.

I will really try to not be so hard on myself and to not work so much. But to work smarter, using my time more efficiently.

I am going to try to get a couple of coaches/mentors to help me make decisions in the business.

On my patio, I will sit outside during the day, drinking my fave beverage and I will flirt with the birds.
The hummingbirds, sparrows, chickadees and my bud, the mockingbird I've been training to sing like a golden-crowned sparrow.

I will enjoy life again, not having to deal with someone else's problems, only my own.

I am going to start doing things I know I should do, without allowing the 'fear of man' to rule what I do. I am going to step out, step up and step aside when need be.

I praise God for all He has done for me and mostly for His love. I am grateful for all I have and I will do my best to continue to bless others thru my personal life and thru the business.

Basically, I am going to do what is best for me, my health, my situation[s]. After so MANY years, I am going to put
    ME first, after God.

    Janine
p.s. I'm going to change my last name too!

Oh sooo many resolutions I could make. So many places to start.
Well I have to say that I wrote my boring little list this am but it had the predictable weight loss, health, home, and general cleanup activities. So I will skip those.

the fun ones were arts... I found that I really enjoy going to museums over the years and yesterday joined the Phila Museum of Art. I would encourage everyone with the time and inclination to join a local museum in their area. God knows they could use our support.

the kids... Right before christmas, we went down and helped Philabundance for the holidays packing food, etc.. Why not have Christmas or some other holiday in July. I am sure that the folks in need could use a hand throughout the year so yes it is being good to myself to help others. It makes me feel warm inside
How about local tutoring in one of the greatest disciplines around, "marketing for high school kids"?

the significant others... I have sworn that I will materially participate in at least one of my wife's line dancing activities this year. She loves it and I am sure she would like me to join her. I guess if I can get her to go on one of my museum jaunts, the least I can do is join a dance or two.

Thats all for me for now.... I wish everyone in the MarketingProfs community a safe and successful 2008. All of you individually and collectively deserve the rewards of friendship and sharing that are a part of this community.

    Hi Carrie

Number One, I'm putting some strict boundaries in place for a client who has consistently broken all the rules during 2007. You know the type, the telephone rings, and he just starts talking as if I had nothing else going on in my life. And the phone calls at 10 PM, when he's just had a great, sometimes alcohol-fuelled idea. That's all got to stop.

Two, I'm going to create some "me-time" to share with my wife. Short trips down to the coast to spend some time breathing salt air and getting sand between our toes, before we get too old to do that stuff.

Three, I'm going to bring a guitar into the office, so when I'm stuck I can pick it up and pick out a tune, or play a few chords and break the writer's block a bit.

Four, I'm going to fly at least once this year. (I've held a PPL since I was 18, haven't flown for seven years, and I miss it.) It's always been a fantastic way to focus my thoughts.

Five, I'm going to dive into KHE at least twice a week and see if there's any really interesting problems I might be able to help someone solve.

    Have a great 2008, everyone.

2008, the year of giving...well, that's what it means to me at least.

First of all, I want to say I enjoyed reading everyone's responses. What a worthwhile topic and all too often overlooked!

My goal is to focus all of my energy on how I can help others. That's right, ALL of my energy and attention on others. This includes my kids, my wife, business partner, clients, everyone. The bottom line is, when you find out what is TRULY important to those around you and you do your best to give it to them (this could be business or personal needs...within reason of course) then not only will you make them happy, you will get what YOU crave as well. Ever heard of giving to get? Well, GETTING can't be your motivation, but if GIVING is, then you will get by default.

This is a philosophy of mine, but it has been put on hyperdrive after I read Bob Burg's new book The Go Giver. Don't want to turn this into a commercial, but if all you do for your clients or business associates this year is give them a copy of this book, you will have made a serious impact on those around you...

Here's to a happy, healthy and peaceful 2008 for all of you out there reading this. Help your fellow man and woman, and keep the good stuff flowing...thanks Marketing Profs!!!

I've taken two years off work and donated my time to the NE Minneapolis community. This year I plan on working more for myself and try to recover.

    Carrie,
I no longer make New Year's resolutions.... these are just promises to myself. I'm going to lose at least 30 lbs by September, stop smoking in June, have manicures and pedicures, and stop worrying so much about money... if I convince myself I have enough, I will.

I will make a point to stretch out (i.e. yoga and pilates stretches) almost every night of the week for 30 minutes. It is amazing how flexible this keeps me, keeps my core strong and it is invigorating to fill my lungs with air!

Juliet---my daughter's club volleyball team's name is: Slainte (it was nice to see it written here in this forum).

    Slainte to all!

I am going to delegate more, strive to be home at a reasoanble hour, and try to work in at least 6 hours of sleep each night. I will try to have at least one sit-down meal per day, and I WILL leave the Blackberry off on Sundays. I might even find the time to pat myself on the back for what we have accomplished thus far, even though I know we have quite a long road ahead...

You should probably all do the same.

    Happy New Year!
