What Do We Do With A Name Like This?

Our charity name, "The Corporation of the Sons of the Clergy" is an accurate description of the fact that we were formed by a group of City of London Merchants in 1655, themselves all sons of clergy, to help the clergy who had suffered terribly under Cromwell. A statute of 1658 granted the organisation status as a Corporation.

350 years on we're still responding to the urgent needs of clergy and their families in financial distress, making more than 2000 grants each year.

However despite a big deficit its pretty hard to fundraise and market the charity effectively with a name like ours.

    Why not "Sons of Clergy"?

    Simple and still reflective or your original name.

    Just be careful on the "Sons of Clergy" tag. It might be construed that you are a pressure group, who are all sons of roman catholic priests, seeking to have the church recognise you and live up to its responsibilities.

    Here's another, name it "Help for the Clergy, Est. in 1658"

    My first reaction is to look at the very words you just used to describe your mission: Respond, Urgent, Need, Families, Distress, Grants.

    Work from there! "Clergy families in need." "Urgent grants for clergy." "Distress response for clergy families."

    Clumsy, perhaps... consult a thesaurus for further ideas.

    Use the original org name and history as a "p.s." description of your institution. Credibility galore, especially if you can cite how MANY families you've helped since 1655...
