Gross Margin %

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Am doing a bit of strategic analysis of selling PCs through Telcos. I need to know what the average gross margin % are for a Laptop, a Notebook, and a Netbook.
Approximations are ok, but would appreciate knowing source.

Thanks. Hakim

We're always very wary of questions about "averages" here, because knowing averages never really helps anyone very much.

Can we understand what your perspective on this question is all about?

Are you trying to understand the margin the telco makes when they sell a bundled device?

Or is you perspective from the manufacturer's viewpoint, i.e. how much margin does the manufacturer make when they sell their product to a telco to bundle up?

How does knowing an average margin help you?

What decisions would you make based on this information?

Look forward to your more detailed advice.

    Hi,

    1. Laptops would be around 9-12 % + you can also make around 1 % revenue by providing the OS. It sounds pretty high for IT industry, but beleive me if your product finish is neat with decent specs you can manage it

    2. Netbook is around 5-7% + you can also make around 1 % revenue by providing the OS - You can bundle it with external DVD Writer - You can get around 30 - 35$.

From a single client, I did get information confirming Swapnil's estimates. Again though, nobody wants to be cited on such sensitive stuff as margins....this is unfortunately a typical problem in my line of work of calculating return on marketing investments and advising on resource allocation
