Kris suggested that you get other sites to link to yours. Do NOT use link farms, though! That will backfire and get you banned from some search engines.

You're getting good advice from this group, but there is a more fundamental question you need to ask: WHY do you want traffic to the site? Are you selling stuff? Do you think site visitors will place orders right on the website, or are you trying to communicate an image or message that will indirectly lead to something else later?

Many companies make the mistake of thinking that "if you build it they will come," and they learn only after dumping a lot of money into building the site that it doesn't work that way. It's not really like opening a storefront on Main Street. It's more like starting a buisness in your garage, and then wondering how customers will find you.

Everything the others have said is true. You do need to get your site noticed by search engine spiders, you do need SEO, you might want to consider buying Google Adwords, etc., etc. But you'd be well advised to figure out what the goal is before you start spending time and money on that.

Hope this is helpful. I've seen too many people chase website traffic only to learn that it doesn't get them anything, and it costs a lot if you fully account for everything it takes to generate that traffic.
