Mac Or Pc

Posted by wendy on 250 Points
I need a new laptop. Can anyone recommend what I should purchase? I have always used a PC. My needs are fairly minimal. My email is web based and I need the basic operating system for my business. I realize this is not a marketing related question but many of you work as I do; in a home office as an independent consultant.
Thanks in advance!

PC. Cheaper and you already know how to use it.

If you where doing a lot of design work (Photoshop, document layout, movie making, etc.), then maybe I'd say a Mac, though I do these on a PC just fine myself. Many people find it easier to do these types of things on a Mac.

Use what you're familiar with - unless you have the urge to switch.

In my work, I use pc. If I had my druthers (great word!) I'd have all Macs. My wife loves her Mac 15" laptop and it travels well. We'll be getting a 13" soon for a soon-to-be college freshman - it'll be a Mac. I sometimes use an almost 10 year old Mac laptop at home (granted it's a bit slow) and, I'd bet that there are more 10 year old Macs still working than 10 year old PCs.

If money is not an object - go Mac.

    Good Luck!

My kids (20 & 27) swear by mac laptops. I use PC.

I can use theirs but prefer to stick with what I know....unless it doesn't have the programs I need.

Stick with what's working for you, and save a bunch of money at the same time.

I've had both PC and Mac starting in the mid-80's. If your time is important to you, then get a macbook pro, not just for today, but also for over the next several years.

depending on your business, maybe both.

I have personally bought a number of computers from a local store who sells recycled/refurbished computers. You can easily buy a Windows-based machine with a one year warranty and a valid Microsoft license which will do everything you describe for under $100. With the money you save, you could also buy a used Mac...

... and, if your business requires you to share files with others, it might be a good idea to be able to accept PC and MAC files.

    Dear Wendy,

I'm a dyed in the wool Mac user. However, go with whatever you
are used to, need, can afford, and will need for the next two years.

    I hope this helps.

    Wendy,
I suggest. Anything you spend above and beyond what you need is coming out of your pocket. And, I would rather see you spend that extra money on a vacation, something that brings in new clients or a toy for the owner operator of this business.

MACs track about double the going rate for PCs. Further, companies like Overstock.com often have refurbished computers that can knock another couple hundred off the price.

Finally, have you looked at the netbooks? They run 395 for a top of the line unit. And they do everything you are talking about.

I am going to suggest something new to consider. When you say basic business, I am assuming you mean word, email and internet access.

You might want to look at the Apple iPad and the various apps they offer. It is pretty amazing. Yes it is small, but great for email, internet and it offers a basic word app and then apps that do things no PC or MAC will do.

I am not saying get it for sure, but go look at it and see if it meets your needs. Ask the Apple clerk to explain the various business apps that are available.

I think I would have to agree with Harry Hallman and say go with something new.

Ok cost may be important but if you want something reliable and something that can be upgraded with ease then go for a mac. Albeit ipad or macbook pro. It is a mistake to think that they are just for designers. As marketers we spend so much of our time trying to convince people to "try it". So do it, go for a mac and the money will be well spent.

Never looked back. My working day is spent on a pc and having a mac also and by comparison, the Mac with all the simple and intuitive stuff is great and refreshing. You know the ads where the pc users do those 5 or 7 second commercials, and the ads where they say – "that was my idea". The macs have been doing all of that for years.

Integration with mobiles is easy and simple – the same with the ipad, you can also make long hand notes on the ipad –try one and see how you get on.
