Upcoming Fundraiser For Animal Shelter

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I'm organizing an "iron man" event of sorts this fall for my local humane society. The idea is to have teams compete in a multitude of backyard sports, i.e.: badminton, putt putt golf, wheel barrow race, free throws, etc. all at different stations. And when I say "team", I mean people. Animals will not be competing in the event.

This is the first time I'm doing an event of this kind and I need a catchy, yet effective name. I thought about incorporating "Olympics" into it somehow since we're approaching the summer games but can't decide whether or not that would be beneficial.

Any names/tag lines you could suggest would be helpful and appreciated! Thank you!

May, or may not be worth considering. How about "Armchair Olympics" and have really mundane games like sock folding, dishwasher packing, etc. if you do free throws, do it from a lazy boy. You get the idea.

    Good luck!

    Critter Games
    Furr-lympics

    Good luck... Love the idea.

Would using "Underdog Olympics" make us sound too desperate? I like the theory behind it because the animals in our shelter ARE underdogs, really. They're the ones left behind, out in the cold, the ones who need homes. They just need a CHANCE to prove they're top dogs. We also house cats... (probably should throw that out there).

This is definitely an event of endurance. The teams must keep pace throughout the entire afternoon, achieving the highest score at each station. It's almost like the Amazing Race. And that's why "Iron Man" came to mind... endurance and skills are required to win.

Furr-lympics IS a cute name, however... Especially if you paired that with a picture of a very sad puppy and kitten. You know, really pull at the heart strings of the community.

Thou shalt NOT use the word "Olympics", and thou shalt NOT seek a catchy name.

    Here endeth the first lesson.

I'm afraid that the word "Olympics" (and the five rings logo) is a registered trade mark (as is the phrase or name "Iron Man") and your use of such will ONLY be permitted if you have first applied for and acquired the legal rights to do so. Something that applies to both names and the logo. Sorry.

That said, even if you'd applied for permission to use this word at the end of the last games, the decision of the Olympic Committee would probably still have gone against you.

And on the off chance that you're thinking of playing the
"But, we're a non-profit ... " card, I can tell you from personal experience with Disney that non-profit status means didly. Intellectual property is just that ... someone else's property.

As for something "catchy"—it is not a selling strategy.

You need something that's relevant to the emotions of the audience and participants.

Gary, I appreciate the feedback on the use of the word "Olympics." Good to know. And in regard to "Iron Man", that was simply a reference to provide people more information on what my goal was for the event.

I understand what you mean on "catchy"... Maybe effective is a better word for what I meant.

However, the use of the term "Armchair Athletes" doesn't really apply - being that most of these events take place on your feet. Haha.

Thanks again for all the input.

    Any further suggestions?

maybe incorporate the term "Pet-A-Thon" such as:

    (your city/community name) Pet-A-Thon 2012

also click on "search trademarks" at the following:
