Revenue Generation Through Displaying Local Ads

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I've been asked to estimate the potential online advertising revenue through displaying local ads on a website that will offer free content and services to a niche (but large niche) market.
Can anyone help me in this regard?
(i.e.) How much shall I charge a person who wants to display his ad (local) in my website (local) page on a weekly basis ?

Thanks in advance :)

The answer for you is whatever you can get. Since you say it will offer free online content I take it that this is a new site. If so You have no real traffic and little to offer. It is an impossible task to really determine what you should charge as it will be up to the good will and patronage of your target advertisers.

I suggest you join an ad network and use some of those ads to fill in and then hit the market and start with a reasonable price. If in a year or so when you have a larger readership you can start to increase the cost.

You do charge what the market will bear. It varies with the amount of traffic the site generates. Have you thought about pay per click?

Thanks Harry Hallman and CarolBlaha for your responses. I too feel that ads will be useful for the website as well as for advertisers when there is a good userbase in the site.
    CarolBlaha,
I thought abut PPC but that too solely depends on user base so, wanted to know more on local ads.

I have a blog post from a while back on how to price advertising at

It is aimed at print media, but everything holds true for your venture also.
