Topic: Taglines/Names

New England Custom Equestrian

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
Hi Everyone,
I have two separate businesses, one is a custom clothing, tailoring and alterations, the other is specializing in custom equestrian apparel, my business are located at the gateway to Cape Cod, Ma. And of course when are located in New England.
I'll complied a list of over 100 names for the equestrian and narrowed it down to six names.

I sent emails to all of my friends and colleagues. They all chose New England Custom Equestrian, one added the word "wear" at the end. I didn't like it, I felt the name was long enough and the words custom equestrian explained what it is we do.
I'm also running the name by a few close clients, whom opinions I value, they like the name. They feel with the surrounding horse lover's community the name is fitting.

As for a tagline I added, "Perfectly Tailored Apparel".

I would like to get as many opinions as I can before moving on to trademarking it. I checked with U.S. Patent & Copyright and the name is available, I was able to get the domain, New England Custom Equestrian.com. I also went so far as to register the initials NECE.com as a domain name, just for my own piece mind. I thought NECE.com would be nice for people that are to lazy to type in the full name.

I will be adding Nece.com, and the full name to my business cards, website, etc. when the times comes.

I eagerly await your thoughts on the subject.

Patricia

To be honest with you, trademarking is perhaps less useful than you imagine. People are stealing information all the time - and it is easy enough to have newenglandcustomequestrian1.com or new-englandcustomequestrian.com or any number of variants.

My advice is not to worry about the details. Your core business strength is the stack emails that you got from customers who took the time and effort to respond. Your email list is not something that is easy to poach.

The conversation amongst your clients and their friends is even less easy to poach.

There are other ways to show yourself as the genuine article - most of which you are already doing: providing high quality satisfaction.

So do what you are doing best, do more of it and forget the hangers on. Your business deserves to survive not because it is there, but because you have stamped out your own ground through your own hard work.

For your tagline consider "Perfectly Tailored Riding Apparel" (to make it clear what you offer).
NECE.com is a shorter form, but less memorable. Realistically, how will people find you? If it's online via searches, then your longer name has much more value.

I wouldn't make NECE.com an important part of the communication. It doesn't mean anything except to people who already know who you are and what you do. Use the full name, so that new customers and search engine bots understand who you serve. And definitely add the tagline Jay suggests so people understand exactly what you do.

    Hi,
If trademarking isn't necessary, nor using NECE for anything then will pass on it. I will use the full name of the business. And adding the word riding to the tagline is very clear.

Thanks, everyone, we couldn't have done it without you.

    All the best,
    Patricia

A trademark just gives you the right to hire an expensive lawyer to prove damages if/when someone misuses your trademark and you suffer damages as a result. You can hire the same lawyer for the same amount of money without filing for a trademark if someone misuses any intellectual property of yours and you suffer damages.

I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice. It's just one person's cynical view of copyright and trademark law from the perspective of a small business owner. If you were McDonald's or Pepsi or Taco Bell I might have a different view, because the value of the intellectual property is so much greater, and the legal fees to enforce a trademark are a much smaller percentage of the potential damages if the trademark is misused.

Oh, I look forward to the challenge of meeting my customer needs. And do you know why? It's because I love what I do and from my customer's point of view we are very good at it. Designing. pattermaking, measurements, sewing, fabrics and creating a garment from start to finish comes very naturally for I and my assisant. It's easy, we do not consider it work, it's a passion.

All the best and Thank you, so very much!
