Thoughts On Name For Video Production Company

Posted by v186403 on 125 Points
Friend and I are starting up a video production company. I'm looking for opinions on a name. Partner is 90% sold on Town Square Video. I'm wondering what a marketing minded person thinks of that. We are going to pretty much be an all around video service. Weddings, music vids, anything.

Some other companies around here that do the same thing have very "boring" names. I personally don't care for Town Square. I think it's also too boring and I think we need something more colorful to differentiate. I'm not thinking any web 2.0 like names like Vidzstr for example either. I was thinking things along the lines of Velocity Video (I don;t personally like this name but I'm just openly brainstorming) with a tag line of something like "Moving your ideas forward." I don't know I really haven't put much thought at all into names yet, but I do know I'm really not liking Town Square too much.

I'm not asking for any suggestions, what I am asking though is if you think that name isn't that bad, or am I right in thinking we need to not be so plain and spice things up a bit? I'm really looking for something a bit more hip sounding. Someone I asked who goes to school for marketing and design already said she liked Velocity more since she feels she would remember it more easily. I'm really trying to do something that makes our name stand out from the competition and something that would gel really well with a nice logo and font that really gives the feeling of both professionalism but something fun and not so high brow.

So any feedback on that name and why you feel it would or would not be good would be great, and if anyone has any tips on what to keep in mind when thinking of a name for a business like this in particular would also be cool.

Ask any marketer what they think of your business name and you are guaranteed one answer.

"What do your customers think of it". Because all a marketer can do is find your customers and ask them if they like it or not.

The other point is does something hip fit in with what you do? Weddings and such are traditional affairs, and a professional is not usually thought of as hip. You could do that if you were doing animations like Aardman in Bristol.

If you can, determine now what you will offer that other production houses in your region can't/won't. Then build your name around this specialty. Maybe it's guaranteed same-day service, or turnkey video ads, etc. As for "Town Square Video" - Phil's right - at least name it "Town Square Video Production" to make it clear what you offer. My feeling is if the feeling of "Town Square" resonates well with your target audience, use it. Otherwise, it's likely not to mean much of anything.

My gut says that "Town Square" is not the right name. It doesn't say or suggest anything useful about the business. At least go with "[Location] Video Production," where [Location] is the name of the town/city or region you'll serve, or a well-known local landmark, or a river, mountain, statue nearby.

That should at least say you're "one of us" to your target audience. "Town Square" doesn't add any value to the name. It just says you're small-time operators; is that the image you want?

Wedding clients usually have a budget in mind so ..... price is important but so is quality and flexibility for their dates etc...where as a Consumer product/service might want increased awareness or increased sales you could/should sell them on the results you bring to their 'bottom line' and take a % of that number..So different clients want different things and will pay differently...Musicians want great sound and mixing ... more so than weddings etc..that don't have scripts and discerning people with perfect pitch perhaps who want another retake.....

Wedding packages might focus on price & post production timeliness so that might influence your naming...musicians etc might want street cred. i.e. experience, testimonials and awards also for a fixed price...a town wanting a video for their web site to attract visitors would have a differ net slant..and expectation for their committee to accept.

Do you want to cater to all these folks?

Like any business you then are drawn away from what bought you to video in the first place and perhaps should hire someone to focus on the non video stuff so you remain enthused.

'Three Legged' something - might work if 3 distinct services are offered - tripod & prism have been done to death...

    Good Luck.
