Name Needed - Upscale Large Group Fitness Studio

Posted by Sweatfactory on 500 Points
Looking for ideas on a new name for a group fitness studio. I am creating a single center that will provide Hot Yoga, Crossfit, Spinning, Aerial Yoga, Kickboxing, and a ton of other group classes in the Washington DC metro area. My clients will no longer have to belong to multiple gyms to get their group fitness fix. It will be all under on roof. We will also have Nutritionist, chiropractors, and massage therapists. I need a name that is easily remembered and relate to my studio. I want people to be able to say "I am going to "????"," and everyone in the area know where they are going. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The facility will have a upscale urban feel with exposed brick walls and cieling rafters.

I see this as a repost but I didn't click to get email feedback. I think a name that can be shortened into a nickname will give you what you need.

    Fitness Junction, Fitness Station.
People can say "meet me at the Junction (station) and everyone will know what that means. Its easy to incorporate into a campaign.

With your urban feel I think also The Loft. And I still see it fitting into everyday language.

Rather than start from scratch, could you share your feedback with the last set of names people provided (https://www.marketingprofs.com/ea/qst_question.asp?qstid=40902)? Without knowing what you're looking for, it's a guessing game for everyone.

Jay, you are correct. I didn't get any responses in three days and I wasn't able to get it to the top of the list again, so I started a new one. Below is a list of names that I have turned down. I do really like the Fitness Loft that Carol suggested, but TheFitnessloft.com and fitnessloft.com were already taken. Plus, coincidentally the fitness loft in NY has almost the same business idea that I am starting here. I will not have the obstacle course and my gym will be a lot larger. Also, I didn't want DC in the name because I plan to open many more in different areas. Names that I like, Sweat Factory Fitness, Fitness Loft, and Gym Box. The last two are exisiting business. I hope this helps

    Fit Hub
    Fit Fab (Studio)

    All 'N One Fitness
    Band of Workouts
    Fitness Class Combo Packs
    A Diversity of Fitness
    The One Stop Fitness Studio
    Crew Diversity, Fitness Studio
    The Turnkey Troop Fitness Club
    Gym Cube

    Universal
    Omni (for Omnipresent)
    Unlimited
    Comprehensive
    Boundless
    Infinite
    Perpetual
    GymDC
    gymSpace
    GymSpaceDC

I don't like "sweat" in the name. Fitness Factory, Body Loft

But can you share why you turned these names down? By understanding your reasons (why you both like and don't like), we can probably give you more on-target names.

Some I don't like because they are too long, others because I don't want DC in the name, and some just because I don't like it. I don't have a reason for some... I like the fitness loft, because it is catchy and Lofts are associated with urban NY life, which my facility will resemble. Sweat Factory, it's memerable, a little urban, when you are working out, you are going to sweat and in a marketing study done on word association 53% of the responses to to workout was sweating, and 30% of the responses to fitness. When you think of factory, you think of warehouse, which many lofts were built from and they all have the urban NY vide. Hope this helps.

The problem is virtually ALL of the names you like, or would like, are already taken as domain names. There have been thousands of folks checking domain availability for gyms, with many registering the best names just on spec. Of course, you could contact the domain owners and perhaps buy a name for a hundreds or even thousands of dollars. I've done it. Sometimes it's the best option. Or you can use a qualifier, such as a location (state/city/district). Just as an example:

    SweatBoxDC
    SweatBoxSOHO
    SweatBoxLA

So either buy or add a qualifier. Your choice.

The problem with using the word "sweat" is that while it connotes exercise, it doesn't connote an "upscale urban feel". You could use "Get Sweaty" as a name ("I am going to Get Sweaty"), but it's not upscale. I would encourage you to look again at the marketing study that you've referenced and find a word/phrase that connotes the benefit of the exercise, rather than the process.

Another suggestion "Sweat and Glow" (SweatAndGlow.com is currently available).

A little aside here - only what do people look like when they are sweaty. After all, sweatiness is something one associates with dirty, smelly artisan types. One might think of "glow" "shine" or "gleam" indicating that one is gleaming with sweat - only without the pungence.

    The Gleam Factory
    Fitness Gleam

Is this a direction for you? Or are you stuck on the concept of sweat?

    Strenuous Gleam Gym
    Gleamed Exertion

I am not stuck on sweat at all. That just happened to be part of a name that I came up with and liked.. The other two that I liked didn't have sweat in them. The fitness loft and gym box.

how about something along the lines of "comprehensive" - a long word that does have sensible connotations of inclusiveness. How about

    The Comprehensive Fitness factory/gym/space/loft
    The comprehesive space
    The fitness comprehensive

All of which could be tagged with the suggestions as to what your fitness skills cover. What are your thoughts? Perhaps someone can come up with a neater word?

It seems you want a name that's available as a "dot com" domain. Good idea. The follow list is NOT available (unless you purchase from the current domain owners):

    fitnessfactory.com
    bodyloft.com
    sweatfactory.com
    fitnessloft.com
    gymbox.com

However, if you add a qualifier (geographic, landmark, lifestyle and the like), then they are all available. For example, as a Parent brand you might choose "GymBox Enterprises" (gymboxenterprises.com is available) and then add your qualifier for each new location as they are developed, GymBoxSoHo.com also available.

Going beyond this domain tactics suggestion is focusing in on the emotional buy in, the hook that your target audience will connect with. You say "a little urban" meaning a little gritty, a little street, a little warehouse district. Young upscale males (and many females) gravitate to something rebellious, something sexy, something away from their parents world, something away from correct and civil, just ask them. I would be testing the more "edgy" concepts with the younger new urban audience in their 20s and 30s, but not if you're targeting the pre-senior set of 50 something. The question is, who is your target niche? And what word(s) will connect with them.

My target audience is professionals ranging from 25 to 35/40. Some of the recent names that I liked, but not sold on are, Fitness Vault, Body Loft, Fitness Factory. Some of the words that I didn't like are; sweatshop, condition, boutique. From reading everyone’s comments I came up with a few more and wanted to run them by you. They are Revolution Factory/Loft/Fitness, Factory Revolution, Evolution Fitness/Loft/Factory, Factory Evolution, and Body Loft. Everyone has been extremely helpful and I greatly appreciate it. Keep the names coming please...

How are your clients going to find you? Maybe the domain name requirement is keeping you from a name that could be just right for the fitness center. You can put a hyphen in a two-word name (e.g., fitness-factory.com) or you can add a suffix (e.g., fitnessfactoryusa.com), or put "the" in front of it (e.g., thefitnessfactory.com), etc.

My personal favorite is still to add DC at the end, and do something similar for any future locations that are not in the DC area. (You don't have to always use the DC ending in advertising or signage, or you can minimize the importance of the suffix.)

My advice: Don't let the tail wag the dog. Get a name that will communicate the message effectively. THEN deal with whatever you have to do to get the domain name close. If you expect people to search for you, the domain name isn't as critical, because the variations will show up in search results either way. If it's PPC advertising, it doesn't matter, since you control the copy. Even if it's print advertising or signage, it's easy enough to handle.
