Combining Company Names

Posted by legacyplumbingco on 250 Points
I have the rights to two company names. Legacy Plumbing and Don Huckaby Plumbing(DHP). Don is my father and retired, I bought him out. DHP has been in business since the 1970's, and has been all service and repair since 2003. I started Legacy in 2003 and have a large new construction business. I want to combine the two names.
Huckaby's Legacy Plumbing?

Also, two taglines..
"Now serving ALL your plumbing needs!"
or
"Plumbing is our business, but Quality is our Legacy"

All help is appreciated!

Well congrats the first thing that came to me was the name u just wrote, you have figured out the name, I suggest you to use this tagline " Plumbing since 1970" or "Quality since 1970". as it will reinforce your position as more experienced hence better service provider.
    Regards,
    Rohit

Just a gut reaction based on your input so far ...

    Don Huckaby Plumbing(DHP)
    Quality is our Legacy

"Don Huckaby Plumbing" seems to be the better branded choice. You don't need to have the word "plumbing" in your tagline, as it's in your name.

I'm thinking that by combining the names you create more of a mouthful, and a name that may be harder to remember. I'd recommend that it would be better to gradually combine the two, but under the name that has a higher "stature" in your region. For the "other" name, you could say "A division of ...." - or keep the names separate to serve different markets.

What are your customers saying? After all, they're the ones who pay you - they're the ones that count.

I presume you are consolidating the plumbing business, and leaving the construction side as an independent firm? Am I right in this thinking?

Plumbing: which do your customers like best. In keeping the family name, drop your father's name, and have Legacy in the tagline so that people will recognize it as being you. Are you local enough to be recognized as a Huckaby when plumbing as Legacy? This connection is important as your customers who like Legacy's style of plumbing may not want the new guys (Huckaby).

As to taglines, you need to find out what your customers think of you, why they choose your company and not one of a hundred others. What is the one thing that all your best customers say about you? If you're not sure, just ask them. Because you're sitting on a pot of gold right now, you have been doing something that is just so normal and everyday for you - yet for your clients it's the one reason they invite you in the house when they slam the door on others. This one piece of information is the key to your tagline.

When looking for a plumber, they don't choose someone because of "plumbing is our business" they want "thirty years of respecting people's houses" or "we don't put out the red carpet, nor do we leave dirty footprints*" (*and yes, I've seen them. I was not impressed by the absence of care). Something along those lines. As I say, there's something your customers see in you that you just can't see in the mirror each morning.

Huckaby Plumbing. Respecting your homes for forty years.
Huckaby Plumbing. Father and now Son. Respecting your home.
Huckaby Plumbing. Father, now son. A legacy of respect and service.

When you find your "aha" moment from your clients, come back to us and we can sort out a new tagline.

to clarify some things: I am taking two businesses and combining them into one. We actually split the business into separate companies in 2003. Dad has now retired and I have put them back together. I actually have the rights to my grandfather's company name and am a third generation plumber. This is why I named my company Legacy. I am now thinking of staying with Legacy, but want to keep the tie to the DHP name.
